The Groninger Museum has established a reputation for its successful exhibitions about nienteenth-century Russian art. This is the fifth major exhibition that the Groninger Museum has devoted to Russian art in recent years, continuing the series of exceptional presentations of Ilya Repin's oeuvre, Russian landscapes, the circle around Diaghilev and the exhibition on 'Russian legends, folk tales and fairy tales', which was highly popular with families. Russian Orientalism in a global context
This volume features new research on Russia’s historic relationship with Asia and the ways it was mediated and represented in the fine, decorative and performing arts and architecture from the mid-eighteenth century to the first two decades of Soviet rule. It interrogates how Russia’s perception of its position on the periphery of the west and its simultaneous self-consciousness as a colonial power shaped its artistic, cultural and national identity as a heterogenous, multi-ethnic empire. It also explores the extent to which cultural practitioners participated in the discursive matrices that advanced Russia’s colonial machinery on the one hand and critiqued and challenged it on the other, especially in territories that were themselves on the fault lines between the east and the west.

Orientalismen in Ostmitteleuropa
Im Rahmen der Debatten über die Tragfähigkeit des Said'schen Orientalismus-Konzepts wurde Ostmitteleuropa bislang bestenfalls als Objekt hegemonialer Diskurse in den Blick genommen. Im Kontrast dazu wird in diesem Band nach ostmitteleuropäischen Orientalismen von 1800 bis in die Zwischenkriegszeit gefragt. Die interdisziplinären Beiträge thematisieren die Wahrnehmungen und Deutungen des Orients in jener europäischen Großregion - vom Baltikum bis zur Krim, von Polen bis nach Bosnien -, die über Jahrhunderte durch die Nachbarschaft zum Osmanischen Reich geprägt wurde. Valentin Serov
Die Werke von Valentin Serov (1865-1911) markieren den Beginn moderner russischer Malerei. Er zeigte sie bei den Secessionen in München, Berlin und Wien, in der Weltausstellung und im Salon d’Automne in Paris sowie auf der Biennale in Venedig und in der Internationalen Ausstellung in Rom. Er gehörte der progressiven Zeitschrift Mir iskusstva an und feierte später mit deren Gründer Diaghilev Erfolge als Bühnenbildner der Ballets Russes. An der Moskauer Kunsthochschule unterrichtete er Petrov-Vodkin, Sapunov, Saryan, Kuznetsov, Mashkov, Larionov und Tatlin. Die Autorin unternimmt eine Reise durch Serovs Künstlerleben durch diverse Städte, Malereiströmungen, Sammlungen, ästhetische Theorien sowie auf die Theaterbühnen und lässt die Bildfindungsprozesse des Künstlers anschaulich werden.
Finite Element Model Updating Using Computational Intelligence Techniques
FEM updating allows FEMs to be tuned better to reflect measured data. It can be conducted using two different statistical frameworks: the maximum likelihood approach and Bayesian approaches. This book applies both strategies to the field of structural mechanics, using vibration data. Computational intelligence techniques including: multi-layer perceptron neural networks; particle swarm and GA-based optimization methods; simulated annealing; response surface methods; and expectation maximization algorithms, are proposed to facilitate the updating process. Based on these methods, the most appropriate updated FEM is selected, a problem that traditional FEM updating has not addressed. This is found to incorporate engineering judgment into finite elements through the formulations of prior distributions. Case studies, demonstrating the principles test the viability of the approaches, and. by critically analysing the state of the art in FEM updating, this book identifies new research directions.
