This book introduces the themes of Human Biology and the philosophies behind it. It begins by explaining the pros and cons of reductionist and holistic approaches to the study of human biology and health, the effect of genes and environment on the developing individual, and the way in which our evolutionary history has affected our health. It also shows how epidemiological studies can provide evidence of factors that affect our health. It goes on to describe the basic structure of the cell. Then it considers nutrition, including the content and importance of a healthy diet, and the digestive system. Case reports throughout all four books in the course demonstrate the relevance of the biological information given to human health.
This text is of use to all students following the GCSE and GNVQ courses in the post 16 year old category and covers the body, its maintenance in good health, the life cycle and the human being and the environment.
