Houses of the Dead
The chronological disjuncture, LBK longhouses have widely been considered to provide ancestral influence for both rectangular and trapezoidal long barrows and cairns, but with the discovery and excavation of more houses in recent times is it possible to observe evidence of more contemporary inspiration. What do the features found beneath long mounds tell us about this and to what extent do they represent domestic structures. Indeed, how can we distinguish between domestic houses or halls and those that may have been constructed for ritual purposes or ended up beneath mounds? Do so called 'mortuary enclosures' reflect ritual or domestic architecture and did side ditches always provide material for a mound or for building construction? This collection of papers seeks to explore the interface between structures often considered to be those of the living with those for the dead.
Environmental Archaeology
This book aims to thoroughly discuss new directions of thinking in the arena of environmental archaeology and test them by presenting new practical applications. Recent theoretical and epistemological advancement in the field of archaeology calls for a re-definition of the subdiscipline of environmental archaeology and its position within the practise of archaeology. New technological and methodological discoveries in hard sciences and computer applications opened fresh ways for interdisciplinary collaborations thus introducing new branches and specialisations that need now to be accommodated and integrated within the previous status-quo. Siedlungsstrukturen im Neolithikum
Die AG Neolithikum stellte neolithische Siedlungen, eine der wichtigsten Merkmale der Sesshaftwerdung, in den Fokus ihrer Sitzungen in Berlin (6.-7.10.2014, 8. Deutscher Archäologiekongress) und Erfurt (15.-18.6.2015, Gemeinschaftstagung von MOVA und WSVA). Ziel war es 2014, allgemeingültige Siedlungsmuster auf der Skala "Haus-Hof-Dorf" herauszuarbeiten und darauf aufbauend Erkenntnisse zu neolithischen Siedlungsstrukturen und -systemen zu gewinnen. Diese konnten 2015 durch das Miteinbeziehen architektonischer Sonderbauten und deren Interpretation um die Aspekte Ritual und Kult ergänzt werden. Der Tagungsband umfasst dreizehn Beiträge zu Siedlungsstrukturen aus der Zeit des Altneolithikums bis in das Endneolithikum und stellt sich der Herausforderung, eine Brücke zwischen Regel und Ausnahme zu schlagen.
The Migration Period between the Oder and the Vistula (2 vols)
This collection of studies is the result of a six-year interdisciplinary research project undertaken by an international team of archaeologists, historians, numismatists and paleobotanists. It constitutes a completely new approach to environmental, cultural and settlement changes during the Migration Period in Central Europe. Part One discusses written sources, theories regarding migration, and environmental change in the first millennium AD. In Part Two, archaeological sources relating to Central Europe in the Migration Period are analysed, while Part Three is devoted to new discoveries between the Oder and the Vistula, including traces of Germanic settlement in northern Poland in the early seventh century. In Part Four, evidence for cultural and settlement changes in neighbouring areas is characterized in a comparative light.
