The rights of children are outlined in article 24 of the Charter of fundamental rights of the European Union; the binding catalogue of rights which institutions and member states are bound to respect when applying EU law. Hi ha diferents maneres d'entendre l'adopció, de viure-la. Hi ha diferents motivacions i diferents decisions, dubtes, interrogants i pors per part de les persones adultes que adopten. Hi ha molts elements de coincidència en els processos, en els conceptes i en les legislacions, però no hi ha maneres modèliques que garanteixin que s'ha fet categòricament bé o malament una adopció.
