Entangled Englishes

Entangled Englishes offers an innovative approach to understanding the ongoing globalization of English by examining it in relation to its multiple, complex, and oftentimes unexpected entanglements. The book explores entangled narratives of English that are imprinted and in circulation in various global contexts. The chapters examine the globalization of English as a phenomenon that is invariably entangled with and through various languages; cultural forms such as ideological commitments and social norms,;or even (im)material objects such as food, signage, and attire. Offering a unique range of perspectives from leading scholars worldwide, this innovative volume presents exciting new research directions for anyone interested in the historical and contemporary complexities of language. This text is key reading for students and researchers of World Englishes, sociolinguistics, multilingualism, and linguistic anthropology.

This book adopts a corpus-based discourse analysis approach to the study of the communicative practices of pick-up artists, offering a systematic exploration of distinct language use in an online community that uses speed-seduction practices for short-term dating and sex. Drawing on a multi-million-word corpus comprising data from online forums, social media, informational websites, and YouTube videos, the volume explores the verbal practices and narrative framing techniques that pick-up artists (PUAs) draw upon in their interactions with women and the terminology-heavy language used in teaching pick-up to foster perceptions of scientific validity. The book also unpacks videos and reports of live interactions to study naturally occurring PUA discourse from different perspectives but also to more closely examine conceptual metaphors of competition and violence and critically reflect on the ethical considerations of working with such communities. This book will appeal to students and scholars in such disciplines as discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, computer-mediated communication, and language and media, as well as those interested in the study of language use online.

Bloomsbury World Englishes Volume 1: Paradigms

"Divided into three volumes and edited by established scholars in the field, Bloomsbury World Englishes provides critical insights into aspects of the global uses and roles of English and their implications. The Paradigms volume analyzes the ways in which we make sense of the English as a global language, its many varieties and how these come into contact and mix with other languages. Its main goal is to move the field forward and beyond existing 'models' that begin to be unfit to describe English(es) in the era of globalization. The Ideologies volume explores the politics and economics of English as well as how the language has an impact on local societies and cultures. The chapters in the volume describe how English is often entangled in societal issues such as inequality, (de-)colonization, racism, oppression, liberation. The Pedagogies volume addresses one of the most important themes in World Englishes: the teaching of English as a world language. The chapters in this volume discuss the teaching and learning of English(es) from a range of perspectives and on the basis of experiences and research from many parts of the world"--

Arabic in Contact

The present volume provides an overview of current trends in the study of language contact involving Arabic. By drawing on the social factors that have converged to create different contact situations, it explores both contact-induced change in Arabic and language change through contact with Arabic. The volume brings together leading scholars who address a variety of topics related to contact-induced change, the emergence of contact languages, codeswitching, as well as language ideologies in contact situations. It offers insights from different theoretical approaches in connection with research fields such as descriptive and historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnolinguistics, and language acquisition. It provides the general linguistic public with an updated, cutting edge overview and appreciation of themes and problems in Arabic linguistics and sociolinguists alike. As of January 2023, this e-book is freely available, thanks to the support of libraries working with Knowledge Unlatched.

Expanding the Lexicon

Expanding the Lexicon

The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon – understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level – by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers’ motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Morpho-Syntactic Patterns in Spoken Korean English

Morpho-Syntactic Patterns in Spoken Korean English

Morpho-Syntactic Patterns in Spoken Korean English presents fundamental research on the use of English by South Korean speakers. Despite the extraordinary and vibrant status of the English language in South Korean society (demonstrated, for example, by the notion of English Fever), research on the forms of English in the South Korean context has been sadly neglected in the study of World Englishes. This monograph is the first to provide a rich and contextualized description of the Korean English morpho-syntactic repertoire. It draws on the specifically compiled Spoken Korean English (SPOKE) corpus to shed light on Korean uses of plural marking, articles, pronouns, prepositions, and verbs in spoken English, and demonstrates that English is indeed the language of those who use it. This volume will be highly relevant for researchers interested in Expanding Circle Englishes, Asian Englishes, spoken language corpora, and morpho-syntactic variation.
