Creating resilient livelihoods for youth in small-scale food production
This publication showcases initiatives that have been successfully implemented to help youth build resilience in the agrifood system, despite the severe consequences of climate change and formidable social and economic challenges. It aims to inspire potential policies and programmes by portraying key needs, challenges and initiatives, as well as lessons learned and opportunities for helping to improve the resilience of livelihoods for youth in small-scale food production. The aim is to draw recommendations from these initiatives, building on the Koronivia Joint work on Agriculture (KJWA) – a landmark decision under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that recognizes the unique potential of agriculture in tackling climate change.
Indigenous youth as agents of change
The following publication "Indigenous youth as agents of change - Actions of Indigenous youth in local food systems during times of adversity" highlights six initiatives from Indigenous youth in regions around the world who are leading innovative solutions and collaborations in the face of adversity brought about by climate change and exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The youth initiatives describe how grassroots groups, networks, and platforms established by Indigenous youth have been essential to the fulfillment of basic needs within their communities in the face of this adversity. The publication has been produced under the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) in collaboration with the Indigenous Peoples´ Unit at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Farmers' Preferences and Willingness to Accept Carbon Payments for Adopting Conservation Management Practices
The potential of agricultural soil carbon sequestration in reducing greenhouse gases and mitigating the impacts of climate change is widely recognized. However, there is limited knowledge of farmers' preferences and willingness to accept carbon payments to switch to carbon-sequestering conservation practices. This study investigates how farmers' preferences and willingness to accept carbon payments differ based on their current adoption behavior toward conservation practices. The data for the analysis were collected through a mail-in survey of row crop producers in South Dakota, conducted from December 2021 to February 2022. The study employed a discrete choice experiment and random parameter logit model to estimate farmers' preferences and willingness to accept carbon payments. Our study shows that farmers' preferences and willingness to accept carbon payments vary based on their adoption status of conservation practices and practice type. The findings suggest that carbon market providers and policymakers should consider developing targeted programs and policies that consider differences in farmers' preferences toward carbon payments based on their current adoption status.
Les jeunes autochtones, agents du changement
La présente publication met en lumière six initiatives menées par de jeunes autochtones dans différentes régions du monde, qui montrent la voie en misant sur des solutions et des collaborations novatrices pour faire face aux difficultés engendrées par le changement climatique et aggravées par la pandémie de covid-19 qui sévit en ce moment. Les initiatives montrent à quel point les groupes, les réseaux et les plateformes mis en place par les jeunes autochtones au niveau local sont essentiels pour satisfaire les besoins fondamentaux de leurs communautés dans ce contexte difficile. Elles illustrent les perspectives qui peuvent s’ouvrir lorsque ces jeunes ont les moyens et le soutien qu’il leur faut pour devenir des agents du changement.
Los jóvenes indígenas como agentes del cambio
En esta publicación se destacan seis iniciativas a cargo de jóvenes indígenas de distintas regiones del mundo, que están impulsando soluciones y colaboraciones innovadoras ante las adversidades provocadas por el cambio climático y agravadas por la actual pandemia de la COVID-19. Estas iniciativas muestran cómo los grupos, las redes y las plataformas comunitarias creadas por los jóvenes indígenas han sido esenciales para satisfacer las necesidades básicas de sus comunidades frente a esta adversidad. Estas iniciativas son una muestra de las oportunidades que pueden surgir cuando se empodera a los jóvenes indígenas y se les apoya adecuadamente para que se conviertan en agentes del cambio.
