Transition to Capitalism?

This work observes how the political ideologies, social values, and theoretical paradigms of Eastern European scholars and politicians changed throughout the period of transformation following the 1989 political revolutions in Eastern Europe. The authors try to reinterpret the institutions, movements, and ideologies that allegedly contributed to the erosion of the old regimes in Eastern Europe, asking whether these--alternative--legacies of communism support the transition to capitalism.

This title was first published in 2001. All people and regions of the world are deeply affected by world events, no matter how closely they embrace or how actively they try to resist their impact. This book explores some of the ways globalization has changed and formed children, youth, and families. It defines some of the ways that culture, politics, religion and world events have altered the attitudes, behaviours and well-being of families. It also outlines some of the approaches that families have taken and could take, in adapting to the changing world around them. Authors provide perspectives from over 20 countries and from many professional backgrounds, including sociology, psychology, religion, political science, peace studies, environmental studies and economics. Suggestions are given for future research studies, interventions with families and the construction of public policies.

Teenage Citizens

Too young to vote or pay taxes, teenagers are off the radar of political scientists. Yet civic identities form during adolescence and are rooted in experiences as members of families, schools, and community organizations. Flanagan helps us understand how young people come to envisage civic engagement, and how their political identities take form.

Strangers to Spouses

Approximately 90 percent of the marriages in India today are reported to be arranged marriages. Parents and families make partner choices and marital decisions for their children, sometimes needing the children only to consent to the decisions of the elders. Given this reality, most men and women who enter into such marriages have very limited pre-marital contact with each other. Several studies have been done on these arranged marriages in India to see how these relationships are formed and what their state of affairs is. The results have been varied and sometimes discrepant. This book is a revised version of a mixed methods study that the author conducted on the quality of relationship in such marriages in India. Specifically, the study explored the levels of marital satisfaction, quality of alternatives, investment of resources, intimacy, passion, and commitment, and examined their association with relationship quality.
