Autism and the Development of Mind

The purpose of this essay is to illustrate how the phenomenon of early childhood autism may cast light on issues that are central to our Understanding Of Normal Child Development - Issues Such As The Emotional origins of social experience and social understanding, the contribution of interpersonal relations to the genesis of symbolism and creative thought, and the role of intersubjectivity in the development of self. Drawing upon philosophical writings as well as empirical research on autism, the author challenges the individualistic and cognitive bias of much developmental psychology, and argues that early human development is founded upon a normal infant's capacity for distinct forms of "I - Thou" and "I - It" relatedness. To a large degree, autism may represent the psycho-pathological sequelae to biologically-based incapacities for social perception and interpersonal engagement.

The Cradle of Thought

In Cradle of Thought Peter Hobson, a Professor of Developmental Psychopathology at the Tavistock Clinic and the University of London, examines how thought develops in infants, focussing on the subsequent differences in the quality of thinking between individuals and what this suggests about the place of thought in the history of evolution. At the book's heart is a radical new theory which tackles head-on the ideas of people like Stephen Pinker. Hobson firmly refutes the notion that thinking is turned on by biologically pre-determined 'modules' in the brain, arguing instead that it arises from the nature and quality of the relationship between parent and child in the first eighteen months of life. Drawing on twenty years of clinical experience, on case histories and experimental and clinical research, this will be a controversial book not only in scientific circles, but also in its contribution to the wider parenting, IQ and nature/nurture debates. Accessible, authoritative and extremely readable, Cradle of Thought is a major work of popular science. 'Any parent reading his account will recognise that it makes sense' Sunday Times

Interdisciplinary perspectives on definitional concerns, underlying mechanisms, and the functional significance of joint attention. Academic interest in the phenomenon of joint attention--the capacity to attend to an object together with another creature--has increased rapidly over the past two decades. Yet it isn't easy to spell out in detail what joint attention is, how it ought to be characterized, and what exactly its significance consists in. The writers for this volume address these and related questions by drawing on a variety of disciplines, including developmental and comparative psychology, philosophy of mind, and social neuroscience. The volume organizes their contributions along ...

This is a truly groundbreaking work that examines today’s notions of folk psychology. Bringing together disciplines as various as cognitive science and anthropology, the authors analyze the consensual views of the subject. The contributors all maintain that current understandings of folk psychology and of the mechanisms that underlie it need to be revised, supplemented or dismissed altogether. That’s why this book is essential reading for those in the field.

Militarism was inseparable from imperialism in Britain, as in other imperialist nations, and its proponents saw schools as ideal means by which to give the nation's youth an early introduction to military drill. This book traces the history of military drill for pupils in elementary schools from 1870-1914.
