Songs on the Death of Children
German poet Friedrich Ruckert's (1788-1866) youngest children died of scarlet fever, the pandemic of his age. Over a six month period in 1834, he wrote hundreds of laments that were published posthumously in the classic poetry collection Kindertotenlieder. Here in English for the first time, these evocative modern translations by a fellow bereaved father reveal "an honest grappling with grief" (The Christian Century). Each poem is accompanied by insights into the bereaved, along with personal anecdotes, historical and cultural information, the latest research on grief, and discussions of literary and biblical allusions.
Dynamics of Neo-Latin and the Vernacular
Dynamics of Neo-Latin and the Vernacular offers a collection of studies that deal with the cultural exchange between Neo-Latin and the vernacular, and with the very cultural mobility that allowed for the successful development of Renaissance bilingual culture. Studying a variety of multilingual issues of language and poetics, of translation and transfer, its authors interpret Renaissance cross-cultural contact as a radically dynamic, ever-shifting process of making cultural meaning. With renewed attention for suitable theoretical and methodological frames of reference, Dynamics of Neo-Latin and the Vernacular firmly resists literary history’s temptation to pin down the Early Modern relationship between languages, literatures and cultures, in favour of stressing the sheer variety and variability of that relationship itself. Renaissance Monks
This volume deals with the intellectual world of “progressive” Benedictine and Cistercian monks who vicariously represent humanists in cloisters (Klosterhumanismus, Bibelhumanismus) in German speaking lands: Conradus Leontorius (1460-1511), Maulbronn, Benedictus Chelidonius (c. 1460-1521), Nuremberg and Vienna, Bolfgangus Marius (1469-1544), Aldersbach in Bavaria, Henricus Urbanus (c. 1470-c. 1539), Georgenthal in the region of Gotha and Erfurt, Vitus Bild Acropolitanus (1481-1529), Augsburg, Nikolaus Ellenbog (1481-1543), of Ottobeuren. For the first time in historical-theological research, new insights are provided into the world of the “social group” called Monastic Humanists who emerged next to the better known Civic Humanists within the diverse, international phenomenon of Renaissance humanism.
Anglo-German Linguistic Relations
This is a collection of papers presented at the conference «Anglo-German Linguistic Relations», held at Queen Mary, University of London in November 2007. The papers cover a wide variety of topics about the relationship between the English and German languages or relate to cultural and literary contacts between English-speaking and German-speaking regions. Individual papers discuss Anglo-German linguistic interplay and affinities both as contemporary phenomena and from a historical perspective. Themes include codification, translation and discourse production from the 17th century to the Second World War; shared metaphors in English and German; political propaganda in English and German; and authorial positioning and perspective in a selection of autobiographical and literary works.

Drama of the Divine Economy
An introduction to the multiplex relation between Creator and creation as an object both of theological construction and religious devotion in the early church. The Mage's Images: Heinrich Khunrath in His Oratory and Laboratory, Volume 1
This is the 1st volume in a 4-volume work entitled The Mage’s Images. The work provides the first in-depth examination of the life and works of Heinrich Khunrath (1560-1605), ‘one of the great Hermetic philosophers’, whose Amphitheatre of Eternal Wisdom (1595/1609) has been described as ‘one of the most important books in the whole literature of theosophical alchemy and the occult sciences’. Khunrath is best known for his novel combination of ‘scripture and picture’ in the complex engravings in his Amphitheatre. In this richly illustrated monograph, Forshaw analyses occult symbolism, with previously unpublished material, offering insight into Khunrath’s insistence on the necessary combination of alchemy, magic, and cabala in ‘Oratory and Laboratory’.
Popular Revenants
There is growing interest in the internationality of the literary Gothic, which is well established in English Studies. Gothic fiction is seen as transgressive, especially in the way it crosses borders, often illicitly. In the 1790s, when the English Gothic novel was emerging, the real or ostensible source of many of these uncanny texts was Germany. This first book in English dedicated to the German Gothic in over thirty years redresses deficiencies in existing English-language sources, which are outdated, piecemeal, or not sufficiently grounded in German Studies.
Revolutionary Biographies in the 19th and 20th Centuries
The volume contains selected contributions to the Max Weber Foundation’s annual conference, organised by the German Historical Institute Moscow. The contributors look at the crisis-ridden processes of modernity through the prism of individual biographies, which manifest themselves in national and social, anti-imperial and de-colonial, global, and regional movements. The contributions cover the Russian, Habsburg, and Ottoman Empires, Germany, Italy, the USA, France, the Soviet Union, Iran, Poland, Turkey, and Africa. They focus on transnational and trans-imperial life paths, networks and the imprints of the actors as well as forms of (auto)biographical self-constitution and the political use of biographical narratives.
