What is narrative? Ridvan Askin brings together aesthetics, contemporary North American fiction, Gilles Deleuze, narrative theory and the recent speculative turn to answer this question. Through this process, he develops a transcendental empiricist concept of narrative. Askin argues against the established consensus of narrative theory for an understanding of narrative as fundamentally nonhuman, unconscious and expressive.

Fiction is generally understood to be a fascinating, yet somehow deficient affair, merely derivative of reality. Die im Band versammelten konzeptuellen und empirischen Perspektiven zeigen angehenden und praktizierenden Lehrkräften konkret auf, wie vielfältig picturebooks den Unterricht bereichern können. In one of the contributions to this edited volume an interviewee argues that "English is power". For researchers in the field of English Studies this raises the questions of where the power of English resides and which types and practices of power are implied in the uses of English. Linguists, scholars of literature and culture, and language educators address aspects of these questions in a wide range of contributions. The book shows that the power of English can oscillate between empowerment and subjection, on the one hand enabling humans to develop manifold capabilities and on the other constraining their scope of action and reflection. How do physical things differ from non-things—human subjects, animals, abstract ideas, or processes? Those questions, which are as old as philosophy itself, have inspired contemporary debates in ecocriticism, thing theory, and in the interdisciplinary field of new materialism. This book argues that contemporary narrative is well placed to map out and work through the spectrum of the material and the philosophical questions that underlie it. This is because narrative does not resolve the tensions at the heart of conceptions of materiality but rather reframes them, envisioning their implications and exploring their relevance to concrete contexts of human interaction. This monograph is structured around a number of novels, experimental fiction, films, and video games that imagine the inherent agency of things but also interrogate the affective and ethical significance of materiality in human terms. Its aim is to demonstrate the power of formal narrative analysis to foster conceptually and ethically sophisticated ways of thinking about thingness in times of ecological crisis—that is, times in which "stuff" can no longer be taken for granted.

Es bezieht sich nicht ausschliesslich auf die Schweiz als viersprachiges Land, sondern geht neue Wege, indem es darüber hinaus das Englische sowie Sprachen berücksichtigt, deren heutige Präsenz in der Schweiz auf Migration beruht. Auch historische Sprachen und Dialekte, die in der Schweiz und im liechtensteinischen Sprachraum gesprochen werden, sowie die drei Schweizer Gebärdensprachen werden behandelt. Mit Ausblicken über die Schweiz hinaus bietet das Handbuch eine erweiterte Perspektive auf die Räume, die die Sprachen der Schweiz einnehmen. So wird das traditionelle Verständnis von Vielsprachigkeit um neue Aspekte und aktuelle Entwicklungen ergänzt.
