Classification of User Tasks by the User Behavior
On-line newspapers have become an important source of information for many people. Readers of on-line newspapers may regularly check the news in general, they may follow the news concerning a certain topic, e.g. when people wanted to get all information that was available on September 11, or they may just check for certain facts such as stock prices or the weather forecast. This thesis deals with the question of whether it is possible to recognize the kind of task a Web user is performing by just looking at the user's behavior. Two studies were conducted to examine whether behavioral aspects, such as mouse and scroll movement, mouse clicks or page view duration, give hint on the surfing mode which may be just browsing, information gathering or fact finding. This thesis is meant to provide a basis for the personalization of Websites such as on-line newspapers where personalization is not only based on the analysis of content information or general topic preferences, but, additionally, on the current context represented by the kind of task a user is performing at the very moment.
Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries

Exploring the Archive
The Ethnologisches Museum in Berlin holds more than 6,500 historical black-and-white photographs from Latin America. These images were produced between 1868 and 1936 and mainly depict ethnological and archaeological motifs, although some portray views of urban or natural landscapes. The contributions to this volume focus on particular series from this extensive archive. In doing so, they illustrate the enormous potential for research inherent within such “repositories of memory”, represent a diverse set of approaches and provide varied interpretations of historical photographs. The contributions focus on the contexts in which these images were produced and provide interpretations of the intentions behind some of the photographs. Moreover, they analyse the acquisition of these photographs and the manner in which they have been preserved and disseminated. Additionally, the contributions highlight the manners in which the images have been used and the impact of some of the formats in which the photographs were published. For centuries, people moved between the Ottoman Empire, Eastern Europe, and Iran. This book studies the biographies of individuals and groups as different as rulers and revolutionaries, frontier bandits and merchants, soldiers and slaves from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. Following their journeys across borders, the case studies of this volume emphasize the profound effect that mobility had on the lives and thoughtworlds of everyone with a Transottoman trajectory.
