Turkey’s position as the only Muslim-majority member of NATO, coupled with its pivotal role in pursuing Western interests in the Middle East and Western Europe, has attracted significant scholarly attention, particularly in the fields of diplomatic and international relations history. In contrast, the cultural and ideological dimensions of the Cold War have begun to be studied systematically only in recent years. In this light, the book is an attempt to present to an international audience some tassels of the complex mosaic of Turkey’s Cold War by focusing on its cultural and ideological dimensions. Adopting a variety of disciplinary approaches, the essays in this collection examine the interconnections between politics and culture, the anti-communist intellectual landscape, and the role of cultural production and the media, questioning how the global dynamics of the Cold War affected political, cultural, and social change in Turkey.
Although fifty years passed since the boom of the theories on Japanese national character and considerable academic literature was produced to debunk its ideological tenets, the Nihonjinron still plays a significant role in the mainstream public discourse on Japanese identity. Intellectuals, journalists, policymakers routinely repropose the ever-lasting cliché of Japanese cultural, linguistic, racial uniqueness. In doing so, they adopt a primordialist stance in the narration of Japanese identity, that is a conception of Japanese nation as a primordial entity, located in an original fatherland since immemorial times. Drawing on the writings of Suzuki Takao and Watanabe Shoichi, the book analyses the rhetorical strategies and discursive features supporting essentialist ideas of Japaneseness. At the same time, it highlights the heuristic value of primordialism as an effective descriptor of the nationalist ideology, thus challenging its widespread usage as a category of analysis.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Practical Applications of Agents and Multi-Agent Systems, PAAMS 2023, held in Guimaraes, Portugal, in July 2023. Neuropathic pain is a common problem in clinical practice, which affects patients quality of life. The more recent approach to this peculiar type of pain is based on the “sensory profiles theory”. According to this theory, neuropathic pain manifests with different combinations of sensory abnormalities, which in turn arise through different pathophysiological mechanisms. Convincing evidence now suggests that the classification of neuropathic pain according to a mechanism-based approach rather than etiology could help in targeting the therapy for the individual patient and would be useful for testing new drugs. My work has therefore focused on disclosing the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain and how they translate into symptoms.
