Pediatric Procedural Adaptations for Low-Resource Settings

Despite global advancements in pediatric medicine, technologies which have become standard-of-care in high-resource settings are unavailable in low-and middle-income countries due to cost, availability, or challenges maintaining equipment. This book compiles evidence-based and expert clinical procedural adaptations in an approachable, case-based, step-by-step guide, aimed to provide educational support for healthcare providers practicing in resource-limited settings. This responds to both the high demand for this content and the importance of gathering experts across continents and pediatric disciplines. Each chapter provides both a theoretical framework and practical discussion of high-yiel...

Care of the Jaundiced Neonate

A complete, authoritative guide to the management and treatment of neonatal jaundice Care of the Jaundiced Neonate focuses exclusively on the scientific underpinnings of jaundice, as well as the care of the jaundiced neonate. Edited by three of the field’s most respected neonatal care experts, the book uniquely explains how the imbalance between bilirubin production and elimination leads to jaundice—and that hazardous levels of unconjugated bilirubin can cause kernicterus, or brain damage. In addition, you’ll find the most current and clinically relevant perspectives on the physiology, genetics, and treatment of neonatal jaundice and related hemolytic conditions. FEATURES Covers all as...

Evidenced Based Medical Care of Hospitalized Children with Local Adaptations in Low-Resource Settings

In this edition of Frontiers in Pediatrics, authors will discuss a wide-variety of pediatric diseases which often lead to severe Illnesses and hospitalizations for children in low-resource settings including certain populations in high-income countries such as Native Americans/Alaskan Natives, refugees, and immigrants. We will focus on the current management in those settings including recent updates, looking at adaptations of care when appropriate. We will attempt to discuss the most common diseases seen in the majority world where at least 80-90% of pediatric deaths occur.

Technologies for Neonatal Care in LMICs

Newborn babies are arguably the most vulnerable class of patients in any society. They are entirely incapable of surviving on their own without external help from carers and society. A poorly attended newborn will more likely die than one who received well-guided and knowledgeable care. Therefore, the neonatal mortality rate of any society represents a quick measure of the efficiency of its healthcare system, available technologies, and knowledge base. It is common knowledge that low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) contribute over 80% of the global annual burden of neonatal deaths. Limited access to sustainable technologies for neonatal care is one of the major impediments to lowering neonatal mortality in LMICs. Highly sophisticated technologies as applied in high-income countries (HICs) may be unaffordable and unsustainable at LMICs, however, a well-crafted basic technology may be appreciably effective in lifesaving, affordable, and easily maintainable by the indigenous people. The promotion, adaptation, implementation, and scale-up of such appropriate technologies by other LMICs could offer them the quickest route to better neonatal survival.

Pediatric Critical Care in Resource-Limited Settings

Millions of children are dying each year with preventable and reversible critical illness, including circulatory shock and respiratory failure. According to the World Health Organization, in 2015, the under-five mortality rate in low-income countries was 76 deaths per 1000 live births – about 11 times the average rate in high-income countries (7 deaths per 1000 live births). There is limited data about the nature of the delivery of critical care in resource-limited regions. The care of critically ill children in low-resource settings is challenging, contributing factors include limitations in the existing infrastructure, lack of resources, and low numbers of appropriately trained healthcar...
