Tropisms

The term "tropism" refers to the growth characteristics exercised by organisms under the influence of external forces. Contextualizing his argument in biology, aesthetics and literature, Ton Verstegen applies this figure to those architectures in which movement and dynamics play a central role. Verstegen argues that spatial animation always entails metaphoric or conceptual animation, providing examples from a variety of architects and demonstrating how computer technologies in design have affected the possibilities of movement in architecture.

20 Years 010

Published for 010 Publisher's twentieth anniversary in 2003, this volume celebrates the publishing vision of Hans Oldewarris and Peter de Winter, 010's founders. Besides hundreds of monographs by and about Dutch architects, 010 has published books on architecture, interior design, photography, industrial design, graphic design and the visual arts. Exhaustively annotated and illustrated, 20 Years 010 provides not only the technical details of each book (size, format, binding) but also the authors, editors, photographers, graphic designers and printers. A brief description of the contents rounds off each entry. Comprehensive indexes give insight into who contributed to which book and in what way. In their introductory essay, Ed Taverne and Cor Wagenaar give a picture of the practice of architectural publishing in the Netherlands during those years.

This volume brings together the contributions from historians of education about their engagement with public history, ranging from musealisation and alternative ways of exhibiting to new ways of storytelling.

Contemporary Dutch School Architecture

Contemporary Dutch School Architecture

"Education has changed drastically within a short period. The design of the educational building has therefore become more of an architectural challenge than ever; classrooms have been replaced by learning domains, main halls have turned into genuine plazas." "This book provides an up to date and revealing survey of recent school architecture in the Netherlands. The four essays and forty school portraits by Like Bijlsma, Dolf Broekhuizen, Paul Groenendijk, Eireen Schreurs and Ton Verstegen analyse and present the changes in the architecture of primary and secondary schools from 1990 to the present." "Architecture can contribute to stimulating learning environments, but architecture is more than an optimal translation of learning processes. The learning environment is also an environment that is used and experienced for a specific period of time. Architecture can create new spatial experiences for new generations that become part of the collective memory. It can thus rejoin tradition, which at this time is a tradition of change." --Book Jacket.

This book is the first scientific study to focus on awards in architecture and the built environment investigating their exponential growth since the 1980s. The celebration of excellence in architecture and related fields remains a phenomenon on which there is strangely little scientific scrutiny. What is to be understood from the plethora of award-winning projects, award-winning buildings and awarded professional practices in the built environment, year after year? Glossy images partake in an intense ballet at every local, regional, national or international award ceremony and they are meant to embody proofs of architectural excellence. However, it is necessary to take a critical distance t...
