This is a story about a guy who was born in a small town in the UK and grew up in a tiny sleepy village in farming countryside. Through a series of coincidences, lots of luck, lots of hard work and I would like to think a set of skills honed over the years, I worked and lived in ten countries across the world, and visited almost fifty in total. But I put it down mostly to lots of very hard work. I subscribe to the adage that your future is what you make it. It is a story of adventures, challenges, opportunities, and romances of a world traveler in the IT industry. I've included a few glimpses into corporate politics in major multinational companies. One of my favorite quotes from back then, from my boss at the time: "I deal with pricks every day I come in here, but it's the assholes I can't stand." I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The cessation of the Cold War in 1992 had many consequences. Following the disintegration of the USSR, the Russian military was in complete disarray. The funds to continue paying troops were not forthcoming and corruption was as much a part of the culture as itchy uniforms and lousy food, and senior officials began brokering arrangements with arms dealers to sell weaponry of all kinds. The Soviet Union had developed sophisticated suitcase nuclear weapons and one of the most disconcerting legacies of these times was when several of these devices disappeared, and despite the tireless efforts of the world's intelligence organizations, no one ever discovered their whereabouts. In 2014 another un...

Health and Safety in a Changing World

Health and Safety in a Changing World

When health and safety regulatory frameworks took their present form in the 1970s, they were seen as a triumph of welfare state intervention. Since then, as heavy industry has declined and office and retail employment have expanded, new ways of working have radically altered the context of health and safety policy. Many people have come to see health and safety interventions as an obstacle to innovation. This book aims to address the changing context of health and safety policy, exploring concerns arising within the profession and the appropriate responses. Its manifesto for reform promises to frame the debate within the professional and policy community for a generation. The result of a major research programme funded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), Health and Safety in a Changing World shows how health and safety policy has developed over time, how it is applied in practice and how best to make it fit-for-purpose in the 21st century. The book will be essential reading for professionals, practitioners and academic readers with an interest in the rapidly-evolving field of health and safety.

Hunters, Hackers and Hermits

Al-Kuwaiti, unbeknown to Matt Talbot, had survived the attack on the Al Qaeda bunker in Afghanistan, and embarks on a car chase through rural countryside in the UK culminating in disaster. Meanwhile, trouble is brewing in North Korea again. A fifth tunnel is detected while being dug north of the Demilitarized Zone towards Seoul. Worse still, purchases of sarin gas in Damascus by North Korea muddy the waters. Following an unusual dearth of rhetoric from the North, forthcoming missile and nuclear tests are detected and the US Administration is losing patience with the increasing frequency of cyber hacking emanating from Shenyang in Northern China, close to the border with North Korea. Matt Talbot, an ex-major of the British SAS, currently a CIA contractor, is requested to help guide detection and destruction of the newest tunnel threat and lead a team to put the hackers out of action. A coalition of navies, led by the US 7th Fleet, converges on the coasts of the Korean Peninsula, finally causing the Hermit Kingdom to back down in an unprecedented display of humility.
