The Visual Culture of al-Andalus in the Christian Kingdoms of Iberia
This book addresses the reception of Islamic visual culture by the northern Iberian kingdoms, by systematically comparing works of art from both sides and fleshing out their historical context. This study includes figurative and iconographic motifs, architectural forms, and even the spolia from constructions and Arabic inscriptions that were embedded in Christian buildings. The Islamic visual culture of al-Andalus was often transformed as it was recreated by Christian hands, bringing to the fore various nuances in the relationship between the two religious communities. Artistic transfer was conditioned by social coexistence between Christians and Muslims—both in the caliphate al-Andalus and in the northern realms—and military conflict. To approach the different ways in which Andalusi visual culture was received in the northern kingdoms, while embracing the vast diversity of case studies available, this book is divided into three thematic sections: Reinterpretation, Appropriation, and Artistic Transfers. This book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, and medieval studies.
Las reliquias y sus usos
Estas V Jornadas internacionales de estudio e innovación sobre “Las reliquias y sus cultos”, auspiciadas por el Proyecto PIIDUZ_3_214 de la Universidad de Zaragoza, son un foro de encuentro, intercambio de ideas y discusión formado por investigadores, docentes y egresados de las diferentes áreas de saber que componen las titulaciones de Humanidades. En esta ocasión están dedicadas concretamente a Las reliquias y sus usos: de lo terapéutico a lo taumatúrgico donde se tratan fenómenos culturales relacionados necesariamente con la fe y la devoción, pero sobre todo con el empleo de las reliquias como instrumento práctico con el que tratar de resolver algunas necesidades del creyente con todo lo que ello implica, incluyendo su aproximación al mundo mágico. Este año dedicamos la portada y contraportada del volumen al Santo Grial de Valencia, a propósito de un estudio interdisciplinar donde han cabido también los análisis científicos, en contraste con la información que proporciona la propia pieza como objeto y materia.

Salutogenic Urbanism
This book offers a new, salutogenic, perspective on the development of early modern cities by exploring profound and complex ways in which architecture and landscape design served to promote public health on an urban scale. Focusing on fifteenth- through nineteenth-century Europe, it addresses the histories of spaces and institutions that supported salubrious living, highlighting the intersections of medical theory, government policy, and architectural practice in designing, improving, and monumentalizing the infrastructure of sanitation and healthcare. Studies in this book highlight the joint role of design thinking and scientific practice in reforming the facilities for treating and preventing disease; the impact of cross-cultural exchange on early modern strategies of urban improvement; and the creation of new therapeutic environments through state, communal, and private initiatives concerned with the preservation of physical and mental health, from recreational landscapes to spa resorts.
Queen as King
Queen as King traces the origins of San Isidoro in León as a royal monastic complex, following its progress as the site changed from a small eleventh-century palatine chapel housed in a double monastery to a great twelfth-century pilgrimage church served by Augustinian canons. Its most groundbreaking contribution to the history of art is the recovery of the lost patronage of Queen Urraca (reigned 1109-1126). Urraca maintained yet subverted her family’s tradition of patronage on the site: to understand her history is to hold the key to the art and architecture of San Isidoro. This new approach to San Isidoro and its patronage allows a major Romanesque monument to be understood more fully than before.
