Privileged Scaffolds in Drug Discovery is the most complete and up-to-date work in the area. Covering a wide range of privileged structures, it is a perfect reference for scientists involved in targeted drug development. The editors recruited epserts from several prestigious Chinese institutions to cover the areas of antiviral drugs, chalcone, pyrimidine, (benz)imidazoles, natural product-derived privileged scaffolds, N-Sulfonyl carboxamides, kinase inhibitors, antitumor molecules, antineurodegenerative drugs, triazoles, oxazolidinone, indole and indoline scaffolds, tigliane diterpenoids, peptide and peptide-based drugs, quassinoids, and others including pseudonatural products, macrocycles, ...

Gold and its Complexes in Anticancer Chemotherapy

This book presents an overview of cancer and the genesis, and development of different treatment strategies and modalities against cancer. The emergence of gold and its complexes as promising anticancer chemotherapeutic agents have the potential to substitute or replace the platinum based chemotherapeutic agents. Gold complexes have demonstrated considerable anti-proliferative properties, chiefly attributed to their anti-mitochondrial effects, they make gold complexes excellent candidates as anti-cancer agents compared to their platinum-based counterparts. This book provides a critical review of recent advances made in the development of gold complexes as anti-cancer agents. In this context, it examines a number of different ligand architectures, provides comprehensive information on gold complexes’ mechanism of action and toxicity issues and, in closing, outlines future research directions.

Many cancer cells critically rely on antioxidant systems for cell survival and are vulnerable to further oxidative impairment triggered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generating agents. Therefore, the classical design and development of inhibitors that target the antioxidant defense enzymes such as thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) could be a promising anticancer strategy. Here, we showed the synthesis, characterization and anti-proliferative activity of gold(I) complexes with pentacyclic triterpene derivatives. Among them, gold(I) complex containing an oleanolic acid derivative (4b) induced ovarian cancer A2780 cells apoptosis by activating endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS). It could inhibit TrxR enzyme activity to elevate ROS, mediate ERS and mitochondrial dysfunction, finally leading to the A2780 cells cycle arrest and apoptosis. Moreover, 4b inhibited A2780 xenograft tumor growth accompanied with increased ROS level and decreased TrxR activity in tumor tissues. This study might pave a new avenue for the design of TrxR inhibitors in anti-ovarian cancer drugs.

Increasing IVF Success with Acupuncture

This practical book provides need-to-know information vital for acupuncturists to treat patients with fertility problems. Nick Dalton-Brewer details the causes of fertility issues, including the impact of lifestyle and diet, and explains the scientific basis for the different methods of treatment. Integrating Assisted Reproduction Techniques (ART) with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapies and acupuncture, he presents his own cutting-edge research on the successful use of these therapies to improve fertility and pregnancy rates and describes a method for integrated diagnosis and treatment. This book will give TCM practitioners direct access to the vital specialist knowledge and technical information needed to treat the increasing numbers of patients with fertility problems effectively. It will also be of interest to doctors of Western medicine concerned about the efficacy of recommending acupuncture treatments as adjuncts to ART.
