Philosophy and Conceptual History of Science in Taiwan
Scholarly studies of mathematics and the sciences, carried out by philos ophers and historians in Taiwan in recent years, have two main goals: first, positive and critical participation in the logical analysis of scientific theories and scientific explanation; and second, conceptual clarification joined with faithful historical investigation of the sciences of traditional and modem China. In this book, Professors Cheng-hung Lin and Daiwie Fu have gathered fine representative essays from both endeavors. Their two introductory discussions guide the reader in three ways. First, we have insightful remarks concerning the development of science studies in Taiwan during the past three decades. Then we see the place of such studies, particularly those in the logic and methodology of science, in the philosophy of science as that discipline has evolved in the West in recent years. Finally we have an account of the changes that have occurred among philosophers and historians of Chinese science as they have turned away from an assump tion of Western definitions of scientific achievement, a tum that is common to Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese and Western scholars.
Advances in Visual Computing
The two volume sets LNCS 8033 and 8034 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Visual Computing, ISVC 2013, held in Rethymnon, Crete, Greece, in July 2013. Gu Hongming's Eccentric Chinese Odyssey
Known for his ultraconservatism and eccentricity, Gu Hongming (1857-1928) remains one of the most controversial figures in modern Chinese intellectual history. A former member of the colonial elite from Penang who was educated in Europe, Gu, in his late twenties, became a Qing loyalist and Confucian spokesman who also defended concubinage, footbinding, and the queue. Novel Technologies Targeting the Rehabilitation of Neurological Disorders
With the gradual aging of the population, neurological disorders, including stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, etc., are causing increasing distress and may even cause the loss of ability to perform activities of daily living. These disorders are generally progressive. Once onset, they may affect the entire life span with subsequent functional impairments such as motor impairment, speech impairment, swallowing impairment, sensory impairment, and cognitive impairment. Rehabilitation therapy is essential for the dysfunction caused by such disorders. Proper rehabilitation programs can improve or compensate for patients' dysfunction, and thus facilitate the restoration of their ability to daily living, help them return to social life, and reduce family and social stress.
