Subtractive Schooling
Winner of the 2000 Outstanding Book Award presented by the American Educational Research Association Winner of the 2001 American Educational Studies Association Critics' Choice Award Honorable Mention, 2000 Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Awards Subtractive Schooling provides a framework for understanding the patterns of immigrant achievement and U.S.-born underachievement frequently noted in the literature and observed by the author in her ethnographic account of regular-track youth attending a comprehensive, virtually all-Mexican, inner-city high school in Houston. Valenzuela argues that schools subtract resources from youth in two major ways: firstly by dismissing their definition of education and secondly, through assimilationist policies and practices that minimize their culture and language. A key consequence is the erosion of students' social capital evident in the absence of academically oriented networks among acculturated, U.S.-born youth.

Ethnicity in the Sunbelt
A century after the first wave of Hispanic settlement in Houston, the city has come to be known as the "Hispanic mecca of Texas." Arnoldo De León's classic study of Hispanic Houston, now updated to cover recent developments and encompass a decade of additional scholarship, showcases the urban experience for Sunbelt Mexican Americans. De León focuses on the development of the barrios in Texas' largest city from the 1920s to the present. Following the generational model, he explores issues of acculturation and identity formation across political and social eras. This contribution to community studies, urban history, and ethnic studies was originally published in 1989 by the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Houston. With the Center's cooperation, it is now available again for a new generation of scholars.

Women, State, and Territorial Legislators, 1895-1995
In 1895 Carrie Clyde Holly, Frances S. Klock and Clara Cressingham were elected to the Colorado General Assembly--the first women state legislators in the United States. Two years later Utah elected the first woman state senator, Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon of Salt Lake City. Arranged by state or territories, this is a listing of the nearly 6,000 women who have served in legislatures in the United States. For each state or territory there is a brief history of women in the legislature, giving the date women gained suffrage in the state, the first election in which women voted for legislators, the first female legislator, election information, and a graph showing the electoral history of women legislators. This is followed by a listing of women who have served in the state legislature, giving the city and county from which she was elected, her party affiliation and the years she served.
