شهدت حقبة الستينات والسبعينيات في القرن الماضي موجة عارمة من البحوث والكتب التي استخدمت الظرفية او الموقفية عنواناً لها، حيث انها احتلت مكانة جديدة في الأدب المعاصر. وكان لعلماء الاجتماع دوراً في انضاج ودعم هذا التوجه. اذا انهم رفضوا ان تكون سمات القائد هي الاساس في نجاح القائد في اداء مهماته. وكان العامل الرئيس في في نشأت النظريات الظرفية عندما تبين ان مدخل السمات والمدخل الانساني والسلوكي قد اخفقت في اكتشاف الطراز القيادي الفاعل لجميع الظروف والاوضاع. ولكنها لم ترفض وجهات نظر المدخل السماتي والسلوكي بصورة مطلقة، لكنها استندت الى ان الكفاءة الحقيقية للقائد هي كفاءته في تقديره الصائب للظروف المحيطة بالعمل.
