Water-Retention Curves of Coarse Soils Without Organic Matter

It is difficult to obtain a reliable water-retention curve (WRC) for coarse-grained soils without organic matter. As a result, the field behavior of draining layers in engineering problems may be poorly predicted. The main goal of this paper is to develop predictive methods for the WRC of coarse-grained soils based on long-column, long-duration drainage test data and available soil properties. The paper first shows that predictive models perform poorly for coarse-grained soils, but four descriptive models can correctly fit the test data. Second, it provides predictive equations for the air-entry value (AEV), residual suction ur, and residual water content ?r as simple functions of the effective size d10 and void ratio e. Third, it provides new formulas that relate d10 and e to the parameters of descriptive models; thus, enabling them to become very simple to use predictive models for ed10 > 0.05 mm. The paper finally shows that small variations in d10 and e have more influence on the saturated permeability than on the WRC parameters.

The Bonjour Effect

Julie Barlow and Jean-Benoit Nadeau spent a decade traveling back and forth to Paris as well as living there. Yet one important lesson never seemed to sink in: how to communicate comfortably with the French, even when you speak their language. In The Bonjour Effect Julie and Jean-Benoit chronicle the lessons they learned after they returned to France to live, for a year, with their twin daughters. They offer up all the lessons they learned and explain, in a book as fizzy as a bottle of the finest French champagne, the most important aspect of all: the French don't communicate, they converse. To understand and speak French well, one must understand that French conversation runs on a set of rul...

"The Story of French", like any good story, tells of spectacular failures and unexpected success. This is the story of the French language - second only to English for the number of countries where it is officially spoken. A language that is the official tongue of two G-7 countries and three European nations. A language with rules so complex that only a few people ever completely master it. Nadeau and Barlow show the readers – through their own experiences of living and travelling to French-speaking countries – how the French language developed and changed over the centuries, how it came to be spoken in the Americas, Africa and Asia and how it gained and maintained its global appeal - unravelling the mystique of a language that has been mysterious for too long. Written in a chronological narrative spanning more than 10 centuries, from ancient French dialects of the 8th century to the present-day French spoken in Quebec, Algeria, Beirut and more. While the story of the French language may have began over a thousand years ago, it is far from over...

Languages for Special Purposes

This handbook gives an overview of language for special purposes (LSP) in scientific, professional and other contexts, with particular focus on teaching and training. It provides insights into research paradigms, theories and methods while also highlighting the practical use of LSPs in concrete discourse situations. The volume is transdisciplinary oriented with a firm basis in the language sciences, including terminology, knowledge transfer, multilingual and cross-cultural exchange.

Asia and the Secular

Asia and the Secular

This volume looks at the secular state in the context of contemporary Asia and investigates whether there existed before modernity antecedents to the condition of secularity, understood as the differentiation of the sphere of the religious from other spheres of social life. The chapters presented in this book examine this issue in national contexts by looking at the historical formation of lexicons that defined the "secular", the "secular state," and "secularism". This approach requires paying attention to modern vernacular languages and their precedents in written traditions with often a very long tradition. This book presents three interpretive frameworks: multiple modernities, variety of secularisms, and typologies of post-colonial secular states.
