This book argues that a New Deal for research in Europe is needed. This New Deal would involve the mobilisation of policy actors across all levels-–regional, national and European-–and their commitment to develop a more effective research system based on actions where they have the greatest impact. The book presents, from a viewpoint inside the European Commission, the nuts and bolts of how EU research policy is actually designed. It also provides a comprehensive analysis, on the basis of factual evidence, not only of the positive impacts of European research, but of the various criticisms that have been made of the Framework Programme.

Das Elsaß ist seit den 80er Jahren eine Hochburg der rechtsextremen französischen Partei Front National. Bisher erwiesen sich alle wissenschaftliche Erklärungsansätze als unzureichend, den aufsehenerregenden Wahlerfolg der Partei zu erklären: Ist das Elsaß doch eine wirtschaftlich prosperierende Region, die insbesondere in ihrem ländlich geprägten Norden weder eine hohe Kriminalitätsrate oder Arbeitslosenquote noch massive soziale Verwerfungen aufweist - Kriterien, die bisher als begünstigend für ein rechtsextremes Votum gewertet wurden. Die vorliegende Studie greift bisher kaum genutzte Ansätze räumlicher Kulturforschung auf und entwickelt diese zu einem Analyseraster, das nicht nur Antworten zur Klärung des konkreten Falls Elsaß liefert, sondern darüber hinaus auch wichtige theoretische Anregungen für die weiter regionale Wahlforschung bietet.

Die aktuelle Auseinandersetzung mit dem Rechtsextremismus erschopft sich oft in einer kurzatmigen Gegenwartsdiagnose. Dieser Band stellt die Debatte auf eine historisch fundierte Grundlage. Bedeutende Konstellationen und Problemstellungen Gewalteskalation nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, Neuer Nationalismus, NS-Ideologie, Verschworungsideologien, Neue Rechte, jugendliche Subkulturen der Neonazis und Skinheads zeigen Inhalt und Bedeutung rechtsextremer Ideologien vom deutschen Kaiserreich bis in die Gegenwart. Die deutsche Entwicklung wird dabei in den europaischen Kontext italienischer Faschismus, franzosischer Nationalismus zwischen den Kriegen, Rechtsextremismus im heutigen Russland eingebettet.
