Cenap Şahabettin, edebiyat tarihimizde Edebiyat-ı Cedide adı da verilen Servet-i Fünun devrinin tanınmış şair ve yazarlarından biridir. Şiir sanatında Tevfik Fikret’le birlikte yahut yer ve tesir yönünden ondan sonra sayılan önemli bir temsilcisidir. 1871 yılında, bugün Makedonya sınırları içinde bulunan Manastır şehrinde doğdu. Cenap Şahabettin, başarılı bir öğrenci olduğu için, ihtisas yapmak üzere devlet tarafından Paris’e gönderildi; orada dört sene kadar kaldı ve edebiyatla da ilgilenerek pek çok Fransız şairiyle tanışıp görüştü. Avrupa dönüşünde Batı tarzındaki şiirlerini Hazîne-i Fünûn, Mektep, Servet-i Fünûn gibi dergilerde yayımladı.
