The Decline of the French Passé Simple
The disappearance of the French simple past has been hotly debated since the early 20th century. This volume offers an overview of its fortunes since French emerged as a language, provides a description of its distinctive features, and discusses the potential impact of its supposed demise on the whole French verb system. These assumptions are tested against a large corpus of contemporary texts. The study concludes that, despite the erosion of its meaning and its increasingly infrequent use, the simple past tense is still used by native speakers in various contexts, and no single substitute has yet emerged. Nevertheless, the simple past may be evolving into a stylistic marker, making it fertile ground for future cross-linguistic studies.

Speech and Thought Presentation in French
This book analyses and describes Speech and Thought Presentation (S&TP) in French from a broad theoretical perspective, building bridges between linguistic, stylistic and narratological frameworks that have until now been developed separately. It combines the French théorie de l'énonciation and different Anglo-Saxon approaches of reported discourse into a harmonious whole, in order to create a new and exciting paradigm for our conception of S&TP strategies. Basing its findings on actual corpora and going beyond the canonical categories of reported discourse, it shows that the study of S&TP strategies is essential to our understanding of phenomena as diverse as the evolution and categorization of literary genres, the production and staging of 'orality' in literature, the various conceptualizations of the notion of 'Truth' in fiction and non-fiction, the expression of points of view in narrative, the structuring of rhetorical strategies and the construction of the 'Self' versus the representation of the 'Other' in discourse.

This present book explores recent advances in modeling discourse processes, in particular, new approaches aimed at understanding pathological language behavior specific to schizophrenia. The contributors examine the modeling paradigm of formal semantics, which falls within the scope of both linguistics and logic while providing overlapping links with other fields such as philosophy of language and cognitive psychology. This book is based on results presented during the series of workshops on (In)Coherence and Discourse organized by SLAM (Schizophrenia and Language: Analysis and Modeling), a project developed to systemize the study of pathological language processing by taking an overarching interdisciplinary approach combining psychology, linguistics, computer science and philosophy. The principle focus is on conversations produced by people with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism. Studies in Functional Discourse Grammar
This book contains eight studies on Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG), with work by FDG's foremost proponents, who provide both an introduction to the theory and a glimpse of current research projects. FDG derives its name from taking the discourse act as the basic unit of linguistic analysis. Each such unit receives four parallel analyses displaying its interpersonal, representational, morphosyntactic and phonological characteristics respectively. Perspectives on Lexicography in Italy and Europe
Lexicography is a very special field of research, in which theory arises from concrete problems and practice moulds on theoretical assumptions in a way of working that is at the same time technical and innovative. The volume offers an overview of the main aspects of the state of art of lexicographical research in Europe, with contributions concerning both historical and synchronic dictionaries and a wide spectrum of the main European languages (French, English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish). Several contributions show the beneficial effects deriving from the close connection between modern lexicography and information technology, which in the last few years profoundly changed the way of designing, realising and using dictionaries. An appendix contains some reflections on lexicography and translation, one of the most important functional goals for both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries.
