Embodying Pragmatism is the first monograph in English devoted to Richard Shusterman, an internationally renowned philosopher and one of today's most innovative thinkers in pragmatism and aesthetics. The book presents a comprehensive account of Shusterman's principal philosophical ideas concerning pragmatism, aesthetics, and literary theory (including such themes as interpretation, aesthetic experience, popular art, and human embodiment - culminating in his proposal of a new discipline called «somaesthetics»). The Frightful Stage
In nineteenth-century Europe the ruling elites viewed the theater as a form of communication which had enormous importance. The theater provided the most significant form of mass entertainment and was the only arena aside from the church in which regular mass gatherings were possible. Therefore, drama censorship occupied a great deal of the ruling class's time and energy, with a particularly focus on proposed scripts that potentially threatened the existing political, legal, and social order. This volume provides the first comprehensive examination of nineteenth-century political theater censorship at a time, in the aftermath of the French Revolution, when the European population was becoming increasingly politically active.
Laughter in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times
Despite popular opinions of the ‘dark Middle Ages’ and a ‘gloomy early modern age,’ many people laughed, smiled, giggled, chuckled, entertained and ridiculed each other. This volume demonstrates how important laughter had been at times and how diverse the situations proved to be in which people laughed, and this from late antiquity to the eighteenth century. The contributions examine a wide gamut of significant cases of laughter in literary texts, historical documents, and art works where laughter determined the relationship among people. In fact, laughter emerges as a kaleidoscopic phenomenon reflecting divine joy, bitter hatred and contempt, satirical perspectives and parodic intentions. In some examples protagonists laughed out of sheer happiness and delight, in others because they felt anxiety and insecurity. It is much more difficult to detect premodern sculptures of laughing figures, but they also existed. Laughter reflected a variety of concerns, interests, and intentions, and the collective approach in this volume to laughter in the past opens many new windows to the history of mentality, social and religious conditions, gender relationships, and power structures.

Die mittlerweile fast 40-jährige Tradition des Breaking in Deutschland bietet faszinierende Einblicke in das Lernen der Tanzpraxen des Hip Hop vom informellen Aneignen auf der Straße bis zur Integration von Kursen in Bildungsinstitutionen. Im Rahmen einer qualitativen Studie und auf der Grundlage narrativer Interviews von Tänzer:innen der ersten Generation bis zu heutigen Schüler:innen führen die Autor:innen in das energiegeladene Gravitationsfeld einer selbstregulierten Tanz- und Lernkultur ein und verbinden dies mit einer ersten umfassenden Darstellung der Geschichte des Tanzes in Deutschland. Michael Rappe (*1964) ist seit 2004 Professor für Geschichte und Theorie der Populären Musik an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. Schwerpunkt seines wissenschaftlichen und publizistischen Arbeitens war und ist die Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte und der Ästhetik afrodiasporischer Musikkulturen - vom Blues über Jazz bis zum Hip-Hop.
