Disparities in Mental Health
Health inequity not only has tremendous economic burden, but also impairs the foundations of social justice in any society. The current state of scientific knowledge supports the existence of significant inequities and disparities between different social groups. A significant part of our understanding of the health inequities lies in the realm of physical diseases, though mental health’s nature makes it more vulnerable to disparities. Mental health issues are sensitive matters that require additional trust, cultural appropriateness, acceptance, and support from healthcare providers and healthcare systems. As a result, not only mental health patients are at risk of disparities that exist in physical diseases, but they also face other challenges such as social stigma, language barriers, and fear of treatment that could result in disparities. Considering all these, we need to understand where the inequities are in the realm of mental health and who is being affected the most. We also need to know the existing policies and their effectiveness and efficiency. And with all these, then, we could plan how to decrease mental health disparities and provide welfare to all.
Operator Algebras and Mathematical Physics
This volume gathers contributions from the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Its Applications (IWOTA) held in Bangalore, India, in December 2013. All articles were written by experts and cover a broad range of original material at the cutting edge of operator theory and its applications. Topics include multivariable operator theory, operator theory on indefinite metric spaces (Krein and Pontryagin spaces) and its applications, spectral theory with applications to differential operators, the geometry of Banach spaces, scattering and time varying linear systems, and wavelets and coherent states.
Continuous Optimization
Continuous optimization is the study of problems in which we wish to opti mize (either maximize or minimize) a continuous function (usually of several variables) often subject to a collection of restrictions on these variables. It has its foundation in the development of calculus by Newton and Leibniz in the 17*^ century. Nowadys, continuous optimization problems are widespread in the mathematical modelling of real world systems for a very broad range of applications. Solution methods for large multivariable constrained continuous optimiza tion problems using computers began with the work of Dantzig in the late 1940s on the simplex method for linear programming problems. Recent re search in continuous optimization has produced a variety of theoretical devel opments, solution methods and new areas of applications. It is impossible to give a full account of the current trends and modern applications of contin uous optimization. It is our intention to present a number of topics in order to show the spectrum of current research activities and the development of numerical methods and applications.
