Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma surgery was the topic of the eleventh World Glaucoma Association Consensus meeting. Glaucoma surgery in primary open-angle glaucoma was also the topic of the second Consensus meeting held in 2005. For the current version, angle closure and angle-closure glaucoma, as well as the secondary glaucomas, were also included. But the expansion of the subject matter is not the only reason for the timing of this new Consensus. Perhaps even more important is the explosion of new surgical ideas and techniques, which are revolutionizing the surgical approach to the glaucoma patient. The idea of targeting anatomic outflow and inflow pathways and individualizing care has opened so many new possibi...

In the Path of Hizbullah

Of the many Islamist groups that have emerged within the Muslim world over the last two decades, perhaps none has had so great an impact on Middle Eastern and International affairs as Hizbullah, the Party of God. This group of mainly Lebanese Shìte Muslims gained both infamy and fame by its resort to militancy mixed with political pragmatism in the pursuit of its goals. The oscillation between these two extremes has left most scholars and policymakers perplexed. This book serves as a pathway for understanding not only Hizbullah but also for other Islamist groups and their challenges to contemporary politics. Hamzeh examines the Hizbullah of Lebanon through a structural analysis using original and archival sources. Based on a constructed theoretical framework from a number of theories on crisis conditions, leadership, political parties and guerrilla warfare, In the Path of Hizbullah stands alone in its qualitative and quantitative treatment of one of the most complex contemporary Islamist organizations and provides a view of the party's future.

Martin Dickson once confided to Stuart Cary Welch "that twenty five years would pass before our fellow specialists would fully comprehend what we had achieved." The "achievement" he was referring to is the monumental double volume The Houghton Shahnama (1981), still ill-understood thirty five years later. Their "achievement" is a treasure trove of information that needs to be rediscovered and reused. Three recent papers that tried to discredit Dickson and Welch provided the impetus to revisit some of the complex manuscripts that they had analyzed, including the British Library Khamseh (O. 2265) and the Cartier Divan of Hafez, to discover historical details that provide a better insight into Safavid society.

Despotism in Iran

Despotism in Iran Translated by M. Reza Abrishamchian Written by Hassan Ghazi To realize just why it is necessary to understand despotism in Iran you only have to remember that despotism has a 2500 year history. To believe that it can be quickly abolished is nothing but a naïve dream. In Despotism in Iran the “how” of despotic rule is dissected, rather than the “why.” The “why” is related to the history of Iran and is not a concern in our time. In modern times there is no historical necessity for this type of government to rely on. Many of the assertions in Despotism in Iran apply to other nations and countries with similar backgrounds who have suffered or currently suffer under despotic regimes.
