Indian Ocean Studies
The Indian Ocean is famously referred to as the "cradle of globalization," as it facilitated cultural and economic exchanges between Africa, the Arab world, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and China, for 5000 years prior to European presence in the region. As this ocean's significance has gained increasing attention from scholars in recent years, few have examined the 'human' dimensions in Indian Ocean exchanges. Including the work of historians, geographers, anthropologists and literary analysts, each essay in this volume addresses a specific human factor, such as the fate of the creole in the Bay of Bengal, creolization as a globalized phenomenon, migrancy and diaspora, the lives of seafarers then and now, and the lives of those who inhabit the ocean's littoral. This volume is a necessary addition to the field of Indian Ocean studies.
Geoinformatics in Citizen Science
The book features contributions that report original research in the theoretical, technological, and social aspects of geoinformation methods, as applied to supporting citizen science. Specifically, the book focuses on the technological aspects of the field and their application toward the recruitment of volunteers and the collection, management, and analysis of geotagged information to support volunteer involvement in scientific projects. Internationally renowned research groups share research in three areas: First, the key methods of geoinformatics within citizen science initiatives to support scientists in discovering new knowledge in specific application domains or in performing relevant activities, such as reliable geodata filtering, management, analysis, synthesis, sharing, and visualization; second, the critical aspects of citizen science initiatives that call for emerging or novel approaches of geoinformatics to acquire and handle geoinformation; and third, novel geoinformatics research that could serve in support of citizen science.
A Global Dataset of Crowdsourced Land Cover and Land Use Reference Data
Abstract: Global land cover is an essential climate variable and a key biophysical driver for earth system models. While remote sensing technology, particularly satellites, have played a key role in providing land cover datasets, large discrepancies have been noted among the available products. Global land use is typically more difficult to map and in many cases cannot be remotely sensed. In-situ or ground-based data and high resolution imagery are thus an important requirement for producing accurate land cover and land use datasets and this is precisely what is lacking. Here we describe the global land cover and land use reference data derived from the Geo-Wiki crowdsourcing platform via four campaigns. These global datasets provide information on human impact, land cover disagreement, wilderness and land cover and land use. Hence, they are relevant for the scientific community that requires reference data for global satellite-derived products, as well as those interested in monitoring global terrestrial ecosystems in general

Chlorophyll Content Estimation of Boreal Conifers Using Hyperspectral Remote Sensing
Using recent methodologies to systematically measure spectral properties of conifer needles, this investigation focussed on linking jack pine (Pinus banksiana) optical characteristics to forest stress indicators, such as chlorophyll concentration. The study area consisted of eight sites near Sudbury, Ontario that were selected based on their relative health condition, age, crown closure, and ease of access from road networks. Needle samples were collected from the study plots for laboratory spectral & chemical measurements. Needle reflectance & transmittance measurements were collected using an airborne spectrographic imager. The analysis presented focusses on high spatial resolution (1 metre) imagery for which tree crowns, shadows, and open understory can be identified visually and approaches can be examined for validity & effects, thereby eliminating confounding variables.
