Einhergehend mit der Reformation wurde die christliche Ehe zum höchsten und gottgewollten Lebensstand idealisiert und geradezu für alle Menschen verbindlich erklärt. Sexuelle Aktivitäten waren allein in der Ehe gestattet, jeder vor- und außereheliche Verkehr dagegen als 'Unzucht' und 'Hurerei' abgewertet und kriminalisiert, womit nichteheliche Lebensgemeinschaften zunehmend unter Druck gerieten. Anhand zahlreicher und zum Teil detailliert geschilderter Fallbeispiele aus den nordwestdeutschen Küstenmarschen Oldenburgs und Ostfrieslands werden auf der einen Seite die Gründe für das Eingehen solcher Paarbeziehungen sowie die Strategien, mit denen die Menschen die an sie gestellten normativen Anforderungen umgingen, aufgezeigt und dargelegt, inwieweit diese Paare in das ländliche Sozialgefüge der Dorfgemeinschaften eingebettet waren. Auf der anderen Seite werden die Rechtfertigungsstrategien der Betroffenen in ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit der Obrigkeit sowie die damit einhergehenden Aushandlungsprozesse aufgezeigt.
