International Series of Monographs in Pure and Applied Biology, Volume 9: The Vegetation of Poland focuses on the plant geography of Poland, including climate, hydrography, geology, and ecology. The selection first offers information on the historical outline of the development of plant geography and the factors affecting the geographical distribution of plants in Poland. Discussions focus on the development of phytogeographical cartography, floristic and ecological plant geography, and the climate, boundaries, land-relief, hydrography, and geology of Poland. The text then ponders on the influence of man and his economic activities on the vegetation of Poland and the floristic statistics and...

La 4e de couverture indique : "Dorota Sajewska proposes an innovative perspective for looking back at the formative process of Polish modernity, and delves into repressed areas of experience connected with World War I and the ensuing emancipatory movements. The book shows that underpinning modern Polish nationhood, is both a romantic myth of independence and a horror of fratricidal war. Searching for traces of memory in precarious bodies inflicted with the violence of war, Necroperformance asks us to acknowledge the fragility of life as it actively reinforces an attitude of respect for the right to live. Sajewska's chief objective is to understand the social impact of remains - of the abject body (dead, wounded, disfigured, despoiled by violence) - its place in culture and its agency. These are remains like the body of Rosa Luxemburg, which opens the book's narrative - a woman, a Jew, a Polish-German communist activist who was imprisoned, persecuted, murdered, and desecrated after death. This alternative archive becomes a basis for thought on a new anthropology rooted in the experience of the Great War and recorded in the formule of modern theatre."

For over 60 years, the accepted view of cultural evolution was that the world's first cities developed in the Fertile Crescent in the 4th millennium BC. This view overlooks the emergence of a much neglected class of sites--the Trypillia megasites of the Ukrainian forest-steppe. The megasites were in fact larger and earlier than the Mesopotamian cities and demonstrate an alternative pathway towards cities without strong central administration and any later urban legacy. In this book, a team of international authors examines the hypothesis of independent Eastern European urbanism using the evidence gathered from the multi-disciplinary investigation of the megasite of Nebelivka.

The Handbook of Polish, Czech, and Slovak Holocaust Fiction aims to increase the visibility and show the versatility of works from East-Central European countries. It contains over 100 entries offering not only facts about the content and motifs but also pointing out the characteristic fictional features of each work and its meaning for academic discourse and wider reception in the country of origin and abroad. The publication will appeal to the academic and broader public i...
