Losbücher, in denen der Leser durch Würfeln oder über ein Losrad zu einem bestimmten Losspruch geleitet wird, wurden in der germanistischen Forschung bislang vor allem als mantische Wahrsagetexte wahrgenommen. Die wesentliche Leistung dieser handschriftenzentrierten kulturhistorischen Studie ist es, dieses Verständnis als Fortschreiben des christlich-theologischen Magiediskurses des Mittelalters zu dekonstruieren. Der Blick in die Handschriften zeigt vielmehr, dass Losbücher nur selten als magisch-mantische Texte ausgegrenzt wurden, sondern als astrologische oder unterhaltende Texte gelesen werden konnten, in die christliche Glaubenspraxis integriert wurden und sogar im Sinn einer Mahnung vor der Wechselhaftigkeit des irdischen Glücks zu einer christlichen, jenseitsorientierten Lebensführung anleiten sollten. Selected Essays on Intermediality by Werner Wolf (1992–2014)
This volume collects twenty-two major essays by Werner Wolf published between 1992 and 2014, all of them revised but retaining the original argument. They form the core of those seminal writings which have contributed to establishing 'intermediality' as an internationally recognized research field, besides providing a by now widely accepted typology of the field and opening intermedial perspectives on areas as varied as narratology, metareferentiality and iconicity. The essays are presented chronologically under the headings of “Theory and Typology”, “Literature–Music Relations”, “Transmedial Narratology”, and “Miscellaneous Transmedial Phenomena” and cover a wide spectrum of topics of both historical and contemporary relevance, ranging from J.S. Bach, Mozart, Schubert and Gulda through Sterne, Hardy, Woolf and Beckett to Jan Steen, Hogarth, Magritte and comics. The Announcement
The Annunciation: a specific event recounted in the Bible and often represented in artworks, but also the prototype of many other announcements throughout the history of Western culture. This volume proposes new readings of pictorial Annunciations from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period – treating aspects such as witnesses, inscriptions and architecture – as well as analyses of some visual echoes, reenactments of the announcement to Mary in sacred and profane contexts up to the twenty-first century. Among the latter are included Venetian decoration glorifying the state, a Jean-Luc Godard film, a video art piece by Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and a saint’s bedroom turned into a pilgrimage site.
