Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse is one of the leading figures of modern art. His unparalleled cut-outs are among the most significant of any artist's late works. When ill health first prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors as his primary technique to make maquettes for a number of commissions, from books and stained glass window designs to tapestries and ceramics. Taking the form of a 'studio diary', the catalogue re-examines the cut-outs in terms of the methods and materials that Matisse used, and looks at the tensions in the works between finish and process; and drawings and colour.

Basquiat
Der amerikanische Maler und Zeichner Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) gehört zu den schillernsten Persönlichkeiten der Kunstgeschichte, seine Freundschaft mit Andy Warhol, Keith Haring und Madonna sind legendär. Picasso
Anlässlich des großen Picasso-Jubiläumsjahres rund um den 50. Todestag des Künstlers, wird der spektakuläre Band zu den frühen Gemälden und Skulpturen Pablo Picassos neu aufgelegt. Die Bilder aus der sogenannten Blauen und Rosa Periode bis hin zum frühen Kubismus, die zwischen 1901 und 1907 entstanden, sind allesamt Meilensteine auf Picassos Weg zum berühmtesten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts. 2019 zeigte die Fondation Beyeler in ihrer bis dato hochkarätigsten Ausstellung rund 80 Meisterwerke aus renommierten Museen und Privatsammlungen. Basquiat
Unzählige Publikationen und Ausstellungen beschäftigen sich mit Jean-Michel Basquiats Leben und Werk, doch eine Episode blieb bisher weitgehend unberücksichtigt: Im Sommer 1982 reiste der New Yorker Künstler auf Einladung des Galeristen Emilio Mazzoli für eine seiner frühen Einzelausstellungen in Europa ins italienische Modena. Innerhalb weniger Tage malte er dort eine Gruppe großformatiger Gemälde, die sein vorheriges Schaffen nicht nur hinsichtlich ihres Maßstabes übertrafen. Jeweils mindestens zwei mal vier Meter groß, markieren sie den Übergang vom Graffiti-Sprayen in den Straßen Manhattans zum Malen auf Leinwand. Zugleich sind sie Ausdruck des Findens einer Identität als Künstler. Die Gemälde – darunter Meisterwerke, die heute als die Herausragendsten seines Œuvre gelten – wurden nie zusammen gezeigt.
