Este livro reúne histórias de muitas mulheres – pesquisadoras, funcionárias do sistema prisional e mulheres privadas de liberdade. É também a consolidação de uma agenda de pesquisa iniciada há alguns anos no Centro de Estudos de Criminalidade e Segurança Pública (CRISP) da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), que busca se atentar aos diferentes públicos femininos que entrecortam o sistema de justiça criminal – seja como operadoras, seja como acusadas, condenadas ou familiares de pessoas enredadas pelo aparelho penal. Mais especificamente, os trabalhos aqui reunidos são produtos de uma pesquisa qualiquantitativa realizada em penitenciárias femininas da Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte nos anos de 2017 e 2018. A base é comum, mas os desenvolvimentos analíticos e teóricos são múltiplos, como ficará evidente ao longo dos capítulos. Talvez essa heterogeneidade – que não significa, de forma alguma, uma ausência de diálogo entre as partes – seja a principal riqueza da presente compilação.

In the Eye of the Storm
This paper examines the response of firms to capital destruction. Using Indian firm data we establish that tropical storms destroy up to 43% of firms' capital. We use this exogenous shock to capital and find that within industry less productive firms suffer disproportionately more, both along the intensive (firm sales) and extensive (firm exit) margins. The effect found across industries is 33% larger, and indicates that capital destruction leads to a shift in sales towards comparative advantage industries. This build-back better effect is driven by firms active in multiple industries and, to a large extent, by shifts in the firm-level production mix within a firm's active set of industries. Finally, while there is no evidence that firms adjust by investing in new industry lines, firms tend to abandon production in industries that exhibit lower comparative advantage. Our baseline estimates imply that for the top 25% of storms, the median firm's industry sales decrease by at least 2.5% and the exit rate of the median firm increases by at least 2%.
Bounded Wilderness
In Bounded Wilderness, Kathryn Jasper focuses on the innovations undertaken at the hermitage of Fonte Avellana in central Italy during the eleventh century by its prior, Peter Damian (d. 1072). The congregation of Fonte Avellana experimented with reforming practices that led to new ways of managing property and relations among clergy, nobles, and the laity. Jasper charts how Damian's notion of monastic reform took advantage of the surrounding topography and geography to amplify the sensory aspects of ascetic experiences. By focusing on monastic landscapes and land ownership, Jasper demonstrates that reform extended beyond abstract ideas. Rather, reform circulated locally through monastic networks and addressed practical concerns such as property boundaries and rights over water, orchards, pastures, and mills. Putting new sources, both documentary and archaeological, into conversation with monastic charters and Damian's letters, Bounded Wilderness reveals the interrelationship of economic practices, religious traditions, and the natural environment in the idea and implementation of reform.
