The Republic of Turkey has long aspired to join Europe both politically and culturally. However, its attempts to do so have been met with scepticism, and there is no unequivocal answer to the question of whether or not Turkey is accepted and viewed as European. This question is of particular interest in the case of Germany, the engine of the European Union’s economy which is not only home to millions of Turkish immigrants, but also has a history of cooperation with Turkey unique among European countries. With its analysis of West German prestige newspapers printed between 1950 and 1975, this study looks into how Germans viewed Turkey from a cultural and political perspective during a critical period of Turkish integration with the West and Europe, and compares this with perceptions of Greece, whose path to Europe was far less problematic by virtue of its classical legacy and Christian heritage.
The term ‘systems theory’ is used to characterize a set of disparate yet related approaches to fields as varied as information theory, cybernetics, biology, sociology, history, literature, and philosophy. What unites each of these traditions of systems theory is a shared focus on general features of systems and their fundamental importance for diverse areas of life. Yet there are considerable differences among these traditions, and each tradition has developed its own methodologies, journals, and forms of anaylsis. This book explores this terrain and provides an overview of and guide to the traditions of systems theory in their considerable variety. The book draws attention to the traditions of systems theory in their historical development, especially as related to the humanities and social sciences, and shows how from these traditions various contemporary developments have ensued. It provides a guide for strains of thought that are key to understanding 20th century intellectual life in many areas.
Die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Bandes wollen einen Beitrag zur Etablierung eines Diskurses zwischen der Philosophie und der interdisziplinär und praktisch orientierten interkulturellen Kommunikation leisten. Damit sollen Begriffe, Annahmen und Methodik der interkulturellen Kommunikation geschärft und ihre Interdisziplinarität verbessert werden. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der philosophischen Auseinandersetzung mit Fragen der interkulturellen Kommunikation und der Interkulturalität. Denkansätze der interkulturellen und der komparativen Philosophie werden aus der Perspektive der interkulturellen Kommunikation und der Interkulturalität dargestellt. Der interdisziplinäre Diskurs wird durch Beiträge der Neuro- und Religionswissenschaften abgerundet.
