IL-1 Inhibition

This special article collection of Frontiers in Pharmacology includes reviews and original articles on different aspects of IL-1 inhibition. Since the time IL-1 and its natural antagonist IL-1Ra have been discovered, specific IL-1 targeted therapies have been developed to cure an increasing number of diseases. The purpose of this Research Topic is to provide an overview of the different clinical uses of IL-1 blockade and new insights in basic research issues.

This book provides an overview of auto-inflammatory syndromes, covering the underlying immune mechanisms that lead to their development, specific disease presentations, and clinical treatment guidelines. The book is divided into two sections, adult and pediatric, with chapters focusing on individuals diseases such as systemic arthritis, hyper-IgD, pap syndrome, idiopathic recurrent pericarditis, and familial Mediterranean fever. Chapters incorporate the most recent advances in disease pathophysiology and examine the underlying inductive and effector mechanisms and therapies that relate to each auto-inflammatory disorder at the genetic, molecular, cellular, and epidemiologic levels. The book also discusses the research behind auto-inflammatory disorders to offer detailed clinical guidelines regarding diagnostic techniques, treatment plans, and advice on how to best transition pediatric patients into adult treatment. This is an invaluable reference on auto-inflammatory syndromes for clinicians and researchers in pediatric and adult rheumatology and immunology.

Osteoarthritis is a public health issue due to its impact in term of handicap. Regarded as a multi-factorial disease, mechanistic and inflammatory theories are no more opposed but, on the contrary, are framed within the same continuum: osteoarthritis, inflammation and degeneration. This book helps readers understand the secrets of this disease.

New Insights into Autoinflammatory Diseases: From Bench to Bedside

Systemic autoinflammatory diseases (SAIDs) are a growing group of rare disorders caused by dysregulation of the innate immune system leading to episodes of organ-specific and systemic inflammation. Autoinflammation as a distinct disease category was first reported in 1999 as a group of monogenic disorders with resultant activation of the inflammasome and cytokine excess, presenting as periodic fever and inflammation in serous membranes. Since this original description, the focus has shifted considerably to the inclusion of complex multifactorial conditions, and more than 30 associated genes have been identified. Disease severity varies from mild to life threatening. Advances in the understanding of the pathogenetic role of interleukin-1, have opened new promising horizons in the treatment of these patients, and significantly altered disease outcome.

The Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean Diet offers researchers and clinicians a single authoritative source which outlines many of the complex features of the Mediterranean diet: ranging from supportive evidence and epidemiological studies, to the antioxidant properties of individual components. This book embraces a holistic approach and effectively investigates the Mediterranean diet from the cell to the nutritional well-being of geographical populations. This book represents essential reading for researchers and practicing clinicians in nutrition, dietetics, endocrinology, and public health, as well as researchers, such as molecular or cellular biochemists, interested in lipids, metabolism, and obesity. Presents one comprehensive, translational source for all aspects of how the Mediterranean diet plays a role in disease prevention and health Experts in nutrition, diet, and endocrinology (from all areas of academic and medical research) take readers from the bench research (cellular and biochemical mechanisms of vitamins and nutrients) to new preventive and therapeutic approaches Features a unique section on novel nutraceuticals and edible plants used in the Mediterranean region
