This book explores how Cuba’s famously successful and inclusive education system has formed young Cubans’ political, social, and moral identities in a country transfigured by new inequalities and moral compromises made in the name of survival. The author examines this educational experience from the perspective of those who grew up in the years of economic crisis following the fall of the Soviet Union, charting their ideals, their frustrations and their struggle to reconcile revolutionary rhetoric with twenty-first century reality.

By comparing the current reform process under President Raúl Castro to Cuba’s opening to market capitalism during the 1990s Special Period crisis, Everyday Adjustments in Havana: Economic Reforms, Mobility, and Emerging Inequalities highlights the differences and continuities between adjustments in both periods and their social impacts. It explores the impacts of specific policies such as the expansion of self-employment and the recreation of a private housing market, examining how changes in domestic and international policies after 2011 have modified the post-Special Period status quo and contributed to the formation of new social groups that did not previously exist in Cuba’s Socialist society.
Race, Class, and Nationalism in the Twenty-First-Century Caribbean
This collection of more than a dozen essays focuses on the political dynamics of race, class, and nationalism in the contemporary Caribbean. Despite the plethora of studies on nationalism in the Caribbean, few have attempted to look at the phenomenon as a political invention that does not—and cannot—serve the interests of all: how essentialist, reductive, overdetermining nationalism is a political and conceptual confusion that forever stalls the project of universal human emancipation. Editors Scott Timcke and Shelene Gomes gather and frame chapters that, in their collective expression, help trace the process of race, class, and nationalism through the contours of a broader political, economic, and social geography. These chapters argue that notions of racial identity have changed over time, but those reformations are not independent of class rule or nationalism. By using several case studies that span the Anglo, Dutch, French, and Spanish Caribbean and focus on the development of political organizations, hardships, and ideology, each of these essays continues the struggle for liberation against elite entrenchment.

La indización de la revista Cine Cubano, iniciada en los años setenta del pasado siglo por la Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí, se convirtió en una herramienta indispensable para los estudiosos del cine, tanto nacional como internacional. La presente edición recoge ahora en un solo volumen los 2840 asientos bibliográficos, organizados temáticamente, correspondientes a los 178 números de los primeros cincuenta años de existencia de la publicación. Se incluyen, además, los índices general, onomástico y de películas, que facilitan acceder rápidamente a la información requerida. Una obra como esta no concluye aquí, y será necesario continuar indizando lo publicado a partir de 2011, pero el camino por recorrer será mucho más fácil gracias a quienes pacientemente lo iniciaron.
