Nationalism in Eastern Europe offers a thorough application of theories of nationalism in an analysis of the recent national revivals and conflicts in Eastern Europe. The book discusses both microsociological theories from social psychology and economics and macrosociological theories from sociology and political science. In a comprehensive comparative analysis these theories are applied to the late-Twentieth-century experiences of Estonia, Moldova, Croatia and the former Czechoslovakia. In doing so, the authors arrive at generalizable explanations of both the prevalence and the potential fatality of nationalism.
Radical Ethnic Movements in Contemporary Europe
Nation states and minorities resort more and more to violence when safeguarding their political interests. Although the violence in the Middle East has been dominating world politics for some time now, European governments have had their share of ethnic violence to contend with as this volume demonstrates. And as the case studies show, ranging as they do from the Basque Country to Chechnya, from Northern Ireland to Bosnia-Herzegovina, this applies to western Europe as much as to eastern Europe. However, in contrast to other parts of the world, instances where political struggles for power and social inclusion between minorities and majorities lead to full-fledged inter-ethnic warfare are still the exception; in the majority of cases conflicts are successfully de-escalated and even resolved. In a comprehensive conclusion, the volume offers a theoretical framework for the development of strategies to deal with violent ethnic conflict.

Die Frage nach den slavischen oder normannischen Wurzeln des altrussischen Staates ist seit dem 18. Jahrhundert ein Politikum ersten Ranges in den Beziehungen zwischen der deutschen, skandinavischen und russischen Historiographie, stossen hier doch Uberlegenheitsgefuhle auf der einen Seite und gewisse Minderwertigkeitskomplexe auf der anderen Seite zusammen. Dabei steht der Konflikt am Anfang der Ablosung der Geschichte als Wissenschaft vom religiosen Weltbild, von antikisierender Gelehrsamkeit und von politischen Legitimationsinteressen. Die Berliner Dissertation untersucht gerade diesen Aspekt, also die Vorgeschichte des Normannismusstreits. Erstmals werden dabei die deutsche, schwedische und russische Tradition zusammen betrachtet.
