Konfessionelle Theologie und Migration

The Antwerp congregation of the Augsburg Confession of the year 1566/67 was the largest and most important Lutheran congregation of the Netherlands and of outstanding importance for the development of dutch Lutheranism. Before they were expelled, gnesiolutheran theologians such as Matthias Flacius and Cyriakus Spangenberg worked in the congregation. In this investigation the author shows how the daughter congregations and their connections to the Antwerp mother congregation were organised, and examines other consequences of the emigration. The book builds a bridge from the prerequisites that led to the founding of the congregation to the emergence of other congrations.

The Protestant pastor Gustav Adolf Warneck (1834-1910) is considered the father of German missiology. This even applies to the Catholic area. In 1874, together with Theodor Christlieb and Reinhold Grundemann, he founded the Allgemeine Missions-Zeitschrift, which essentially led the cooperation between the mission societies in conferences, etc. and finally resulted in a merger of the German evangelical missions into an umbrella organization. As a retired pastor, he was appointed professor of missiology at the University of Halle in 1896 until his retirement in 1908, the first chair of this kind in the German-speaking area. The monumental 'Mission Doctrine', which has been published since 1892...

Every child knows what is celebrated at Christmas. But what happens on holidays like Pentecost and Ascension Day? Who were Saint Martin and Saint Nicholas? What do we celebrate on Thanksgiving and All Saints' Day? Why do we dye Easter eggs? With this book, children actively discover the church year. Starting with Advent, there are child-friendly factual texts, explanatory illustrations and creative suggestions on how to organize these special times for each festival and each year.

German Radical Pietism

Pietism is increasingly recognized as the most important movement in Protestant Christianity since the Reformation of the sixteenth century. Simply put, early Protestant reformers were concerned with reforming the doctrine and beliefs of Christians whereas the Pietiest leaders were concerned with reforming the lives and behavior of Christians. This, coupled with other disagreements, led to calls for separation, which in turn gave rise to the movement best described as radical Pietism. German Radical Pietism introduces the English reader to the research of the major contemporary scholar of radical Pietism, Hans Schneider. Originally appearing in the comprehensive study of the history of Pieti...

Actualité de la pensée médiévale. Recueil d’articles.

This volume contains the papers presented at the 47th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (Leuven, 1998). The general theme of the meeting was the unity of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Main papers on this topic were read by R.L. Brawley, J. Delobel, A. Denaux, J.A. Fitzmeyer, F.W. Horn, J. Kremer, A. Lindemann, O. Mainville, D. Marguerat, F. Neirynck, W. Radl, M. Rese, J. Taylor, C.M. Tuckett, and J. Verheyden. While a large majority of scholars agree that Luke intended his work to cover both the past and the continuing history of Jesus (Gospel and Acts), the essays also illustrate the complexities of this view on the unity of Luke-Acts when it comes to interpret the various a...

Hegel on Ethics and Politics

This series makes available in English some important work by German philosophers on major figures in the German philosophical tradition. The volumes will provide critical perspectives on philosophers of great significance to the Anglo-American philosophical community, perspectives that have been largely ignored except by a handful of writers on German philosophy. The dissemination of this work will be of enormous value to Anglophone students and scholars of the history of German philosophy. This collection brings together in translation the finest post-war German language scholarship on Hegel's social and political philosophy, concentrating on the Elements of the Philosophy of Right. Many of the essays appear in English here for the first time; all are translated anew.
