Translation, the Canon and its Discontents

This collection addresses the complex process by which translation and other forms of rewriting have contributed to canon formation, revision, destabilization, and dismantlement. Through the play between version and subversion, which is inherent to any form of rewriting, these essays – focusing on translations since the sixteenth century down to the present day – stress the role of translation and adaptation as potentially transformative mediations, capable of shaping and undermining identities. Such manipulation is deeply ambivalent, since it can be used as a means of disseminating the ideology of oppressive regimes at the expense of the source text; but it can also serve to garner attention to marginalised texts. This tense interplay between political, social, and aesthetic purposes almost inevitably generates discontents, which may turn out to be the outcome of translation in general. However, discontent is a relational concept, depending on where one stands in the field of competing positions that is the canon.

Este libro estudia la transformacíon de la literatura infantil y juvenil (LIJ) en textos multimedia y pretende sistematizar una metodología de crítica a las adaptaciones audiovisuales en español de obras de LIJ inglesas y alemanas y a los productos (pseudo)literarios derivados, cuya proliferación excesiva se acompaña de una preocupante falta de calidad. Para lograr estos objetivos se han seleccionado obras en inglés y alemán dirigidas a niños y jóvenes, y de gran popularidad en la cultura origen y en la meta gracias a la adaptación audiovisual. Primero se analiza el texto literario original y su adaptación al medio audiovisual en sus vertientes técnica y lingüística. Luego se estudia el texto audiovisual derivado (doblaje y/o subtitulación), incluyendo comentarios valorativos con respecto a las estrategias de traducción empleadas. Literary and multimodal texts for children and young people play an important role in their acquisition of language and literacy, and they are a flourishing part of publishing and translating activities today. This book brings together twenty-one papers on the particular aspect of the translation of feigned orality. As the link between the literary and the multimodal text, fictional dialogue is the appropriate place for evoking orality, lending authenticity and credibility to the narrated plot and giving a voice to fictitious characters. La Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación y Humanidades de Cuenca acogió durante los días 27 y 28 de octubre del año 2000 el I Encuentro Literatura Infantil y Universidad, y que, con el título concreto de ’La Literatura Infantil en el siglo XXI’, organizó el CEPLI (Centro de Estudios de Promoción de la Lectura y Literatura Infantil) de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha.
