Pragmatics and Translation
This volume presents innovative research on the interface between pragmatics and translation. Taking a broad understanding of translation, papers are presented in four different parts. Part I focuses on interpreting; Part II centers on the translation of fictional and non-fictional texts and spaces; Part III discusses audiovisual translation; and Part IV explores translation in a wider context that includes transforming senses and action into language. The issues that transpire as worth exploring in these areas are mediality and multi-modality, interpersonal pragmatics, close and approximate renditions, interpretese and translationese, participation structures and the negotiation of discourses and power.
Empirical modelling of translation and interpreting
Empirical research is carried out in a cyclic way: approaching a research area bottom-up, data lead to interpretations and ideally to the abstraction of laws, on the basis of which a theory can be derived. Deductive research is based on a theory, on the basis of which hypotheses can be formulated and tested against the background of empirical data. Looking at the state-of-the-art in translation studies, either theories as well as models are designed or empirical data are collected and interpreted. The importance of didactic training in conference interpreting has become the subject of increased discussion. This collective volume provides overviews of theories and examples of training practices and tools for a didactic approach to the development of interpreting competence. This book is geared towards new institutions offering interpreter training, teachers just starting out in conference interpreter training and who lack experience, as well as experienced interpreter training practitioners who may be interested in theory-based training. This volume does not aim to present in-depth scientific theories. Individual theoretical perspectives are discussed where they provide the basis for a specific application in interpreter training. Non-professional Interpreting and Translation
In the light of recent waves of mass immigration, non-professional interpreting and translation (NPIT) is spreading at an unprecedented pace. While as recently as the late 20th century much of the field was a largely uncharted territory, the current proportions of NPIT suggest that the phenomenon is here to stay and needs to be studied with all due academic rigour.
