On the Trail of the Yellow Tiger

The Manchu Qing victory over the Chinese Ming Dynasty in the mid-seventeenth century was one of the most surprising and traumatic developments in China's long history. In the last year of the Ming, the southwest region of China became the base of operations for the notorious leader Zhang Xianzhong (1605-47), a peasant rebel known as the Yellow Tiger. Zhang's systematic reign of terror allegedly resulted in the deaths of at least one-sixth of the population of the entire Sichuan province in just two years. The rich surviving source record, however, indicates that much of the destruction took place well after Zhang's death in 1647 and can be attributed to independent warlords, marauding bandit...

Crop Improvement by Omics and Bioinformatics

Crop improvement has been continuously driven by the demand for food security and sustainability. The caloric and nutritional needs of a growing world population require that global food production increase by one billion tons over the next few decades, but the current growth rate falls far short. Moreover, rapid changes in the environment are accelerating land degradation, aggravating pests and diseases, introducing extreme stresses, and reducing crop productivity. Genetic technologies and molecular breeding tools offer novel opportunities for modern crop breeding. In the past few decades, remarkable progress has been achieved in the discovery of genes for crop yield, quality, and resistance and in the dissection of plant molecular mechanisms. With the continuous advancement in sequencing technology, molecular markers, and gene editing, a large number of excellent crop varieties have been cultivated.

The Death of Yuli

The protagonist of this book is He Mengxia, a primary school teacher. He lived in the home of a distant relative, Cui Shi, and also served as a tutor of his family. Cui Shi has a widowed daughter-in-law, Bai Liying, who was born in a big family. Her son, Peng Lang, was learning from He Mengxia. He Mengxia and Bai Liying fell in love from admiration. However, this was a love that was doomed to be hopeless. Due to her frustration, Bai Liying introduced her sister-in-law Junqian to He Mengxia and forced them to marry by using "the scheme of grafting trees and removing flowers, and the scheme of replacing a plum with a dead peach". Bai Liying felt sorry for her dead husband. On one hand, she kil...

Cytokines, Novel Cell Death Models and Pathways in Cardiovascular Diseases

Cytokines, Novel Cell Death Models and Pathways in Cardiovascular Diseases

Cytokines are soluble proteins secreted by a wide variety of cells in the body, playing crucial roles in many physiological responses and are involved in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Recently, there is great progress in discoveries that some novel cytokines, including secreted frizzled-related proteins (SFRPs), adiponectin, and C1q/TNF-Related Proteins (CTRPs), can perform a protective effect in cardiometabolic diseases, heart failure and coronary heart disease. However, the mechanisms underlying the molecular and pathophysiological actions of these cytokines in CVDs are still vague. Novel mechanisms of cell death including pyroptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis, cuproptosis, and PANoptosis have been considered novel therapeutic targets for CVDs. Some cytokines have been shown to regulate the cell death pathway in the incidence and development of CVDs. Further investigations are needed to understand the link between these novel cytokines and novel cell death models and pathways in CVDs.
