Futures of Dance Studies

A collaboration between well-established and rising scholars, Futures of Dance Studies suggests multiple directions for new research in the field. Essays address dance in a wider range of contexts--onstage, on screen, in the studio, and on the street--and deploy methods from diverse disciplines. Engaging African American and African diasporic studies, Latinx and Latin American studies, gender and sexuality studies, and Asian American and Asian studies, this anthology demonstrates the relevance of dance analysis to adjacent fields"--

My dissertation is located within the field of performance phenomenology, with an emphasis on the practice of the performer. Examining the works of three contemporary artists in dance and theatre -- Claudia Contin Arlecchino, Virgilio Sieni, and Ann Carlson -- who make performance in conversation with visual arts, I focus on the phenomenon of the performer's gesture, or aesthetic movement, considering it as a bridge between performing arts and visual arts. By working on images, these artists establish a relationship between form and the act of perFORMing. The passage that I propose from the word performance to the word performing emphasizes the process of making as thinking -- that is, the r...

Race and the Forms of Knowledge

Enacts a radically interdisciplinary intersectionality to position performance-based research in solidarity with decoloniality This boldly innovative work interrogates the form and meaning of artistic research (also called practice research, performance as research, and research-creation), examining its development within the context of predominately white institutions that have enabled and depoliticized it while highlighting its radical potential when reframed as a lineage of critical whiteness practice. Ben Spatz crafts a fluid yet critical new framework, explored via a series of case studies that includes Spatz’s own practice-as-research, to productively confront hegemonic modes of whit...

Engaging with Brecht

This book makes the case for Bertolt Brecht’s continued importance at a time when events of the 21st century cry out for a studied means of producing theatre for social change. Here is a unique step-by-step process for realizing Brecht’s ways of working onstage using the 2015 Texas Tech University production of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children as a model for exploration. Particular Brecht concepts—the epic, Verfremdung, the Fabel, gestus, historicization, literarization, the “Not...but,” Arrangement, and the Separation of the Elements—are explained and applied to scenes and plays. Brecht’s complicated relationship with Konstantin Stanislavsky is also explored in relation to their separate views on acting. For theatrical practitioners and educators, this volume is a record of pedagogical engagement, an empirical study of Brecht’s work in performance at a higher institution of learning using graduate and undergraduate students.

Eugenia is late for her father's birthday: and she knows full well that celebrations for Paolo De Gasperis, a prominent Milanese entrepreneur, are not ordinary occasions. She enters the house in a hurry, and then she stops, taken aback: the drawing room is empty of guests. The news came a few days ago: the De Gasperis company's huge building site has been seized, and Paolo has been charged with serious offences. Lucy, his wife, is devastated: she can already see their assets confiscated, the family ruined. But Eugenia does not know that everything is changing. She...

Resistant Form: Aristophanes and the Comedy of Crisis

Can attending to poetic form help us imagine a radical politics and bridge the gap between pressing contemporary political concerns and an ancient literature that often seems steeped in dynamics of oppression? The corpus of the fifth-century Athenian playwright Aristophanes includes some of the funniest yet most disturbing comedies of Western literature. His work’s anarchic experimentation with language invites a radically “oversensitive” hyperformalism, a formalistic overanalysis that disrupts, disables, or even abolishes a range of normativities (government, labor, reproduction, gender). Exceeding not just historicist contextualism, but also conventional notions of laughter and the l...
