A obra foi proposta em razão do meteórico aumento das ações de erro médico, ao ponto de já estar sendo considerado um problema de saúde pública. Esse fato denuncia o afastamento da ética da relação médico-paciente e aponta para um dos mais deploráveis dramas decorrentes da violação da cidadania, notadamente no que concerne aos sacrossantos direitos à vida e à saúde. This book, originally published in 1987, is a socio-cultural analysis of a tropical belle epoque: Rio de Janeiro between 1898 and 1914.
