Connecting Histories in Afghanistan

Most histories of nineteenth-century Afghanistan argue that the country remained immune to the colonialism emanating from British India because, militarily, Afghan defenders were successful in keeping out British imperial invaders. However, despite these military victories, colonial influences still made their way into Afghanistan. Looking closely at commerce in and between Kabul, Peshawar, and Qandahar, this book reveals how local Afghan nomads and Indian bankers responded to state policies on trade. British colonial political emphasis on Kabul had significant commercial consequences both for the city itself and for the cities it displaced to become the capital of the emerging Afghan state. Focused on routing between three key markets, Connecting Histories in Afghanistan challenges the overtly political tone and Orientalist bias that characterize classic colonialism and much contemporary discussion of Afghanistan.

Winning at Work Against All Odds

This book is based on the firm belief that all you have to do to win at work is to manage the 3 Ms—men, money and material in a time-bound manner with a clear objective in mind and value systems unflinchingly in place. Once this happens, no odds are big enough to stop you from emerging as a winner. Going beyond management jargon, Ashwani Lohani, one of India’s most accomplished bureaucrats credited with turning around organisations like India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and Madhya Pradesh Tourism shares his inspiring tale of grit and determination in his inimitable passionate and forthright style. A must read for all managers from the corporate world and PSUs, this book reveals the inside story of working in the government.

Calcium

This volume provides a lucid state-of-the-art tour of the critical signaling roles calcium plays in both the normal and carcinogenic cell cycles of proliferation, differentiation, and death. Whitfield and Chakravarthy (Institute for Biological Sciences, National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa) commence their discussion with the intriguing comment that no revolution has had as much an impact on Earth as the Great Calcium-Driven Eukaryotic Revolution occurring soon after the planet's birth. The final chapter explains how calcium also drives responsiveness in plants. Includes exceptionally well-referenced chapters, crisp color graphics, and a bilingual French-English abstract. PARP Inhibitors for Cancer Therapy provides a comprehensive overview of the role of PARP in cancer therapy. The volume covers the history of the discovery of PARP (poly ADP ribose polymerase) and its role in DNA repair. In addition, a description of discovery of the PARP family, and other DNA maintenance-associated PARPs will also be discussed. The volume also features a section on accessible chemistry behind the development of inhibitors. PARP inhibitors are a group of pharmacological inhibitors that are a particularly good target for cancer therapy. PARP plays a pivotal role in DNA repair and may contribute to the therapeutic resistance to DNA damaging agents used to treat cancer. Researchers have learned a tremendous amount about the biology of PARP and how tumour-specific defects in DNA repair can be exploited by PARPi. The “synthetic lethality” of PARPi is an exciting concept for cancer therapy and has led to a heightened activity in this area.
