Entre as décadas de 1940 e 1960, Alagoinhas, cidade do interior baiano que fica a cerca de 120 quilômetros de Salvador, atravessou uma intensificação no processo de urbanização. O seu contingente demográfico praticamente duplicou, ao passo que a ocupação na área urbana se expandia. Este processo estabelecia uma relação de mão dupla com a vida política na cidade, quando, por exemplo, trabalhadores urbanos passaram a se destacar no cenário eleitoral, sendo reconhecidos como uma parcela relevante do eleitorado local. Além disso, foram eleitos vereadores, alguns deles operários, que desempenharam o papel de interlocutores entre os trabalhadores e o Estado. Questões ligadas a esses sujeitos sociais passaram a se fazer presentes na agenda política da cidade, seguramente em uma proporção ainda não verificada em outro momento da história republicana.

A partir da realização de uma semana de formação de professores sobre o tema "Ambientalização curricular no ensino médio profissional", um desdobramento de um projeto de ensino proposto pela professora Lakshmi Hofstatter e pelo professor Rodrigo Passos, após diálogo com as professoras Joana Paixão e Cristiane Brito, surgiu a ideia da submissão de uma proposta à Chamada Interna n.o 07/2020 da Pró-Reitoria de Extensão do Instituto Federal Baiano (IF Baiano) – Apoio à Publicação de Livros Eletrônicos.
