Translating Human Rights in Education

The 2006 United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) is the first human rights treaty to explicitly acknowledge the right to education for persons with disabilities. In order to realize this right, the convention’s Article 24 mandates state parties to ensure inclusive education systems that overcome outright exclusion as well as segregation in special education settings. Despite this major global policy change to tackle the discriminations persons with disabilities face in education, this has yet to take effect in most school systems worldwide. Focusing on the factors undermining the realization of disability rights in education, Julia Biermann probes cur...

Interdisciplinary educational turn The challenges of a complex and volatile world require solutions that reconcile divergent perspectives and interests. In schools, interdisciplinarity has been integrated within curricula for decades, yet it is rarely applied as a collaborative practice. Communication between different fields of research is not enough. Without meaningful collaboration, opportunities to connect are lost, and teachers and students fail to benefit from the experience of lived interdisciplinarity. A new periodical, entitled EDU:TRANSVERSAL, presents the latest findings of national and international transversal research as well as the state of the art of interdisciplinarity in didactics. The aim of this annual publication is to stimulate a transversal turn in education. The first issue of a new periodical of transversal research in education New national and international interdisciplinary research on didactics With contributions by Christine Künzli David, Anna Maria Loffredo, Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, and others

Featuring leading voices in the field from across Canada and Europe, this edited collection offers empirical analyses of the historical, social, cultural, and legislative determinants of inclusive education in Canadian schools. Covering four thematic areas including the structure, culture, and practices of inclusive education, the volume offers comparative insights from a European perspective, engaging critically with widely held views of Canada as a world leader in inclusive education. Providing rich comparisons with educational systems in Germany, Spain, and Finland, chapters explore in-depth the assessment structures and curricula specific to Canada, as well as educational policy, and explore attitudes and practices in relation to diverse student populations, including refugee and indigenous peoples, and students with special educational needs. This volume will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in multicultural education, international and comparative education, as well as educational policy more specifically. Those involved with inclusion and special educational needs will also benefit from this volume.

Katastrophen

Handbook of Accessible Communication

Accessible communication comprises all measures employed to reduce communication barriers in various situations and fields of activity. Disabilities, illnesses, different educational opportunities and/or major life events can result in vastly different requirements in terms of how texts or messages must be prepared in order to meet the individual needs and access conditions of the recipients of accessible communication. This handbook examines and critically reflects accessible communication in its interdisciplinary breadth. Current findings, proposed solutions and research desiderata are juxtaposed with reports from practitioners and users, who provide insights into how they deal with accessible communication and highlight current and future requirements and problems.
