This book is the first to assess the impacts of the world’s three principal maritime canals – the Kiel, the Panama, the Suez – as invasion corridors for alien biota. These three canals differ in their hydrological regimes, the types of biotas they connect, and in their permeability to invasions.
Forum on fisheries science in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea: Scaling up science for effective fisheries management
This publication presents the outcomes and conclusions of the Forum on Fisheries Science in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (Fish Forum 2024), including abstracts of keynote addresses, contributions and posters. Organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, this event gathered scientists, fishers, stakeholders, researchers, engineers, academics, practitioners, managers and decision-makers from around the world to share knowledge on the latest developments and trends in fisheries science and discuss existing and emerging challenges as well as research priorities. The outcomes and abstracts are organized according to the three themes of Fish Forum 2024: better science for better advice; healthy seas and sustainable fisheries; and economic and technological innovation for resilient fisheries. The aim of this compilation is to provide insights to support decision-making processes and better advice in the region that will help shape the future of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries.

Bipolar Disorder
This book examines in detail the diagnostic approach to manic depressive (bipolar) illness, with special reference to the borderline zones with unipolar depression and schizoaffective disorder. Among other diagnostic issues considered are mixed episodes (often misdiagnosed by psychiatrists), rapid cycling, and the confusion with personality disorders. Within the context of diagnosis and understanding of the dynamics of bipolar disorder, temperament, character, and personality are all extensively discussed. Neurocognitive deficit and disability are covered, as are elements of evolutionary biology and behavior. With regard to treatment, the major focus is on evidence-based therapy, with reference to the results of randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses; in addition, contemporary guidelines and future trends are examined. Handbook on fish age determination: a Mediterranean experience
This handbook provides guidance on methods for use in fish ageing studies. Fish age, among other biological parameters, is one of the most relevant pieces of data to attain sustainable exploitation levels of fishery resources. Indeed, most analytical methods used in stock assessment require knowledge of demographic structure according to age of stocks, as well as to recruitment, growth, maturity, natural mortality, etc., which are strictly linked to information on age and age structure. The handbook was put together to deal with identified gaps – which affect both the precision and the accuracy of estimations – regarding ageing schemes, criteria and methodologies used in preparing calcified structures. It focuses on the general principles that underpin age analysis (assignment of birth date, preparation methods, aging scheme reading and identification of true and false rings). Crucially, it aims to contribute to the establishment of common analysis methods, which can enable better calibration across the diverse institutes involved, thereby improving the quality and reliability of results.
