On behalf of the Program Committee, a very warm welcome to the Seventh Italian Conference on Computational Linguistics (CLiC-it 2020). This edition of the conference is held in Bologna and organised by the University of Bologna. The CLiC-it conference series is an initiative of the Italian Association for Computational Linguistics (AILC) which, after six years of activity, has clearly established itself as the premier national forum for research and development in the fields of Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing, where leading researchers and practitioners from academia and industry meet to share their research results, experiences, and challenges.

Cognitive Plausibility in Natural Language Processing

This book explores the cognitive plausibility of computational language models and why it’s an important factor in their development and evaluation. The authors present the idea that more can be learned about cognitive plausibility of computational language models by linking signals of cognitive processing load in humans to interpretability methods that allow for exploration of the hidden mechanisms of neural models. The book identifies limitations when applying the existing methodology for representational analyses to contextualized settings and critiques the current emphasis on form over more grounded approaches to modeling language. The authors discuss how novel techniques for transfer and curriculum learning could lead to cognitively more plausible generalization capabilities in models. The book also highlights the importance of instance-level evaluation and includes thorough discussion of the ethical considerations that may arise throughout the various stages of cognitive plausibility research.

Evolution of Semantic Systems

Evolution of Semantic Systems

Complex systems in nature and society make use of information for the development of their internal organization and the control of their functional mechanisms. Alongside technical aspects of storing, transmitting and processing information, the various semantic aspects of information, such as meaning, sense, reference and function, play a decisive part in the analysis of such systems. With the aim of fostering a better understanding of semantic systems from an evolutionary and multidisciplinary perspective, this volume collects contributions by philosophers and natural scientists, linguists, information and computer scientists. They do not follow a single research paradigm; rather they shed...

Word Frequency Distributions

This book is a comprehensive introduction to the statistical analysis of word frequency distributions, intended for computational linguists, corpus linguists, psycholinguists, and researchers in the field of quantitative stylistics. It aims to make these techniques more accessible for non-specialists, both theoretically, by means of a careful introduction to the underlying probabilistic and statistical concepts, and practically, by providing a program library implementing the main models for word frequency distributions.

Pad - Pages on Arts and Design - #14

After generating an interesting debate thanks to PAD 13 “Design for Territory” issue, edited by M. Parente & C. Sedini and awarded with the ADI index selection 2017, we are now glad to launch PAD 14 in partnership with AIAP, the Italian Design Association of Visual Communication, as our new publisher. This new release focuses entirely on the strategic Design Research tracks across the complex Mediterranean scenario, investigating reasons and perspectives. Index “Editorial #14. Research and Reasoning in the Mediterranean Area“, Marinella Ferrara I. A CRITICAL VIEW “The Island of the Possible”, Barbara Predan II. CONTEMPORARY PANORAMA “The development of Circular Economy material...

Following the publication of Italian Ceramic Art, Skira presents a compilation devoted primarily to the modern decorative arts, that will offer a highly extensive and versatile anthology of writings, accompanied by technical and in-depth captions, and a scientifically documented, yet concise and absorbing essay. The collection is organized chronologically starting with the fabrics conceived by the artists of the Secessions Movements in Germany in the 1900s, such as Moser, Hoffman, and Klimt. This volume then takes an in-depth look at subsequent artists and periods such as Art Nouveau; the fabrics of Deco and Novecento design; European and American production in the 1950s, which show the influence from informal artistic culture; and the experiences of Pop Art, Op Art and Kinetic Art, including their contemporary successes. This volume includes biographies of the designers and main manufacturers, a glossary of technical terms, a thematic bibliography, and an index of names that will prove highly useful for specialists, collectors, and those who simply have an interest in art history.
