Based on an analysis of data from different corpora, it describes the compound words that Italian has created in the course of the centuries, highlighting elements of continuity with Latin as well as innovative aspects.

L'italiano è generalmente considerata una lingua che utilizza prevalentemente la derivazione per espandere il proprio lessico; d'altra parte, la composizione ha recentemente attirato l'attenzione degli studiosi in relazione al crescente numero di neologismi creati negli ultimi decenni. Lungi dall'essere un fenomeno recente, la formazione di parole composte è attestata in italiano fin dalla fase antica: questo volume ne delinea per la prima volta un profilo dalle Origini all'età contemporanea, mettendo in luce gli elementi di continuità con il latino e gli aspetti innovativi. L'analisi, articolata in due parti - la prima focalizzata sull'italiano antico, la seconda sui secoli successivi - si serve degli strumenti teorici della Morfologia delle Costruzioni, per descrivere e interpretare il meccanismo di composizione da un punto di vista sia formale sia semantico. Il volume è corredato di un'appendice in cui sono riportati i composti analizzati e i dati quantitativi relativi alle frequenze.
