Colonising Te Whanganui ā Tara and Marketing Wellington, 1840-1849
This book examines the advertising posters, town plans and geographical views that encouraged middle-class emigration to New Zealand in the 1840s. It explores how the New Zealand Company exploited visual literacy to advertise its settlement in Te Whanganui ā Tara Wellington. A tale of two towns, prospective English settlers looked to Wellington to make their homes, while Te Whanganui ā Tara was already home to numerous Māori sub-tribes. The book explores the worlds of each to ask how the images produced by the New Zealand Company were complicit in transferring Māori land into English ownership. Not seeking blame, it works instead to understand, and investigates processes of redress, offering hope for a post post-colonial future in Aotearoa New Zealand. This book will interest scholars and students of migration, visual culture and print history.
Contradiction Studies – Exploring the Field
“Contradiction” is a core concept in the humanities and the social sciences. Beside the classical ideas of logical or dialectical contradiction, instances of “lived” contradiction and strategies of coping with it are objects of this study. Contradiction Studies discuss the many ways in which explicit or implicit contradictions are negotiated in different political or cultural settings. This volume collects articles that tackle the concept of contradiction, practices of contradicting and lived contradictions from a number of relevant perspectives and assembles contributions from linguistics, literary studies, philosophy, political science, and media studies.
On the Discursive Deconstruction and Reconstruction of Europe
Europe is the name for a scintillating variety of historically emerged concepts, constantly developed and discussed over time. Its complexity and fuzziness is reflected in a multitude of myths, topoi, symbols and boundaries, which all constitute shared knowledge of the concept of EUROPE and which continue to influence attempts to (de- and re-)construct European identity. The case studies collected in this volume investigate the competing concepts of Europe in political and public discourses from a wide range of perspectives (e.g. frame semantics, discourse linguistics, multimodal analysis), focusing on the following aspects: How is EUROPE conceptualised, (re-)negotiated and legitimised by different political actors, political bodies and institutions? How does “the European idea” change throughout history and how is the re-emerging idea of nationality evaluated?

Inspecting the Interview
Interviews are omnipresent in scholarship and public discourses. They play a crucial role in various spheres, from collecting research data to providing persons in the public eye a platform in print and online media. Interviews do not only capture a dialogue; they provide a framework in which dialogue gets staged. As such a framework, the interview protocols experiential knowledge and personal experience in certain ways, according interlocutors different degrees of authority to speak. The volume contributes state-of-the-art research on what conclusions can be drawn from these and further reflections for a general assessment of the interview as method and form; it offers fundamental conceptualizations of the interview as a structured and mediated site of knowledge production. Contemporary Approaches to Legal Linguistics
In this volume, scholars explore and discuss current issues in Theoretical Legal Linguistics (TLL) and Applied Legal Linguistics (ALL), contributing to the growing body of international research in the field.
